Re: Ford & Volvo?
I just saw a CL ad for a '96 Four Winns with a Ford 5.0 and Volvo outdrive. Is that possible? And if so, is the Ford power a reason to avoid buying it?
Dave
Some might say that.
Both Volvo and Merc stopped using Ford marine engines many years ago. Wear parts like the manifolds, coupler, ignition and EFI(if installed) might become harder (and more expensive) to find in the aftermarket.........forcing you to go to OEM(read more expensive) to get.
None of the above will prevent you from getting those parts.
Since there's probably more GM marine engines out there I might lean in that direction.
Also, let me add that if you want to do DIY fix and repair using used parts, take a look on EBAY any day and do a search for Mercruiser vs Volvo.
You'll find 3 times more Mercruiser engines, drives, parts, etc than Volvo. Volvo builds absolutely EXCELLENT "stuff" by the way. (maybe they never break
)
When I swapped out my Wonderful OMC 450 King Cobra I looked for a BIG-Block Volvo Penta engine/drive combination to replace it with.
I found none in the time that I looked. I found SEVERAL Mercruiser engignes/drives to buy locally.
[My engine/drive came from wind damaged Bayliner.....a tree fell on it
]
(maybe more trees fall on Mercruiser powered boats than Volvo......:facepalm
