Ford solid state ignition on a boat

On my 72 johnson 125, I have been having ignition problems which seem to be resolved (for now anyway). However, I am fairly comfortable working w/ Ford electronic ignition as I have retrofitted it to my old truck. It seems to me that it has the same amount of wires and basic hook up as my boat ignition. Only differences that come to mind are sensor resistance differences and 2 stroke instead of 4. Any thoughts on this?

Well I have absolutely no experience with Fords or Ford ignition. But you will have to use the outboards trigger as a twostroke have to fire at each tdc, opposide a car. Are the Fords 90 deg v and same firing order as your outboard ?

I know some of the older outboards have distributor ignition as well as cars, on this board some guy even told about using a powerpack from i Chrysler on a Chrysler outboard, as far as I remember.

From what I can tell is that on a car engine (I ll use a 5.0 l ford for example :) )the cam rotates the distributor once for every 2 crank rotations. So that means that every time the sensor picks up, it fires, I would think since its a 4 stroke. Now, on an outboard, being 2 stroke, it fires on every crankshaft rotation. This would seem to be the same as a typical distributor on a car. The sensor picks up off of the crank, but it still fires every time like in a car distributor. Only things that may be different is gaps and sensor readings. Im definitly not any where near a boat mechanic, but im fairly comfortable working on car motors.

hello
dude
trons are trons.
it does not matter who made the device or where it was made. trons are trons.
if its like the old dura spark with the hall effect distributer pick up you may look at the sensor input voltage to the ign control unit, you may have to use the ford ign coil. what is the primary ign coil voltage output on the ford unit? it may be compatible with the original coil.about all the dura spark module did was remove and add the ground for the coil primaries depending on a signal from a sensor. not much different from the amplifier systems that chrysler and omc as well as merc tried. I really cant see any safty issues as long as this is a home project . but I still dont recomend using non standard parts
good luck and keep posting

Not sure what the primary output voltage is, have to research that one. Is the sensor on a 72 johnson 125 a hall effect? My main concern was the sensor unable to go with a different type bign box.
