Ford Ranger Engine Swap

The engine on my ford ranger is getting tired and I am looking at swapping the engine tranny to get more pulling power.

My Ranger is a 93 X-cab STX 2wd 3.0 5 Speed that I picked up in October of 92...one of the real early ones (the vin says Number 000636 and probably explains why its holding up so good. When they built it, the line workers weren't tired of the new body style yet. :) )
Years ago, I replaced the rear end and changed the gearing from the 3.54 to a much nicer 3.73.
Anyways, since it mainly sits in the driveway and used for hauling, I've been able to live with the baulky transmission problem (worn out synchronizers) for a couple of years now. I am considering doing a new engine/tranny swap. I'd like the new 4.0 OHC engine, but I was afraid it wouldn't fit or it might need too much "reworking" to get it working correctly.
My question, if I put in the 4.0 OHV with an automatic, can I get a floor mounted shifter or do I have to replace the componants in the steering column with a column shifter?
Thanks,
Nav

Re: Ford Ranger Engine Swap

I wouldn't bother, Nav.

I had a '93 STX 4X4 3.0 and wore the 5 speed tranny out. I looked into swapping for a 4 liter and/or a 5.0 V8. Turned out that the swap would have cost more than the truck would be worth after the swap. It was a great truck for the first 100k.

I bit the bullet and swapped it on a used '98 Mercedes ML320 (this was Spring of '99). What a great machine!!

She turned over 100k yesterday and is still a new truck. Everything works like it did new, no squeaks or rattles. Tows much better than the Ranger and gets better mileage. Best yet, it drives like a Mercedes and has all of the Mercedes luxury features and comforts.

There are much better vehicles for utility and towing than a Ranger that would cost you (difference) a lot less than a swap.

Good luck. :)

Navigator,

The issue with the swap isn't so much the size of the engine, it's the electronics.

Even though the 3.0 and 4.0 share the same basic engine management system, there are major component differences.

If you really want to do this, the best thing to do is buy an entire powertrain at a salvage yard. Wiring harnesses/powertrain control module (PCM) included.

I have a customer that just finished putting in a 5.0 L (V-8) into a Ranger. It fit fine.

The engine/trans. is out of a 94 GT Mustang. The Ranger and the Explorer/Mountaineer shared the same front end geometry until '02'. The Explorer/Mountaineer offered a v-8 option.

What a "sleeper". The only way to tell there is something "special" about this truck is the dual exhausts and the exhaust note.

By the way, a Triton (SOHC, 4.6L V-8) will not fit, it's too wide.

Re: Ford Ranger Engine Swap

JB,
I still am going to purchase a new "Family" tow vehicle in the very near future. (I have a new baby on the way and he's due on Jan 2'nd so I have to Upsize the family car) I am looking at the ML series as well as the Toyota Sequoia right now. I still haven't made up my mind yet. Both are about the same price, but the Sequoia has more room inside. I had a thread going earlier about SUV recommendations, but I was away when Iboats servers crashed and lost that "month" of postings. I never got to read the replies... :(

The Ranger project is just something to keep me busy. I still use it to haul junk around and I am about to build an addition on the house too. I dont think I can talk my wife into letting me haul bags of concrete and lumber in the future new "leather clad" family hauler. ;) :)

DJohns,
I was planning to do the whole drive train in the swap. You said one of your customers just put a 5.0 from a mustang GT. Do you know what other "mods" had to be made to accomodate the engine (besides a custom length drive shaft)
I already put heavy duty springs all the way around so the weight increase shouldn't be a problem. Can the rear diff handle the extra torque or did he put in a different axle too?

This intrigues me... :) I know someone who has an old 302 with tranny lying in his shop.

Thanks,
Nav

Navigator, check this site out it gives some of the basics, as well as costs. There maybe some better prices or alternatives out there but I know these kits make it alot easier to perform the swap( s-10 with 2.8L converted to 5.7L.) Good luck.
Ranger Engine Swap

Re: Ford Ranger Engine Swap

Navigator,

It is very straightforward, from what I understand.

Engine/trans mounts from a 2WD V-8 (5.0) Explorer.

The rear diff. is the same size (8.8").
