In connection with my earlier inquiries... Are there any other motors that can be substituted for a omc 302 (1975)? Am disturbed about the possabillity of the cracked block. Motor was fairly new, did't even have any carbon build up at the top of cyl. also was bored .030 over with 351 heads. Would like to hear any ideas or suggestions that would put the old boat back in the water.

stay with a ford mustang engine or a 351 (5.8), looking at my original manual all components are the same or at least in the same place. the only difference will be the front motor mounts placement - if you are staying in fresh water no problem.

get a basic block with heads and transfer all the components - upgrade to exhaust manifold conversion kit from basic power.com

remember, the marine 302 has a completely different firing order than the mustang 302. this is cam related. the marine 302 shares the firing order with the 351

the block and heads will be the same, however since you have the 5.8 heads already, why not simply swap up to a 5.8 block as well.

yes you are right the 302/5L high output shares the same firing order with the 351/5.8; the regular 302/5L (no HO, like mine) shares the firing order with the 460 ford

What will the conv. kit do for me ? All the inside parts , heads etc. are very new, low hours . Figure on having a block worked and fitted with parts I already have . providing I did not waste the lifters and valves, Thanks for your input . By the way was just stuck in Pageland , SC on monday.

well i know where South Carolina is..:D - had to Google Pageland  and find out where you really was

to the topic, you have a 1975 302- using log style exhaust manifolds i imagine; those manifolds are obsolete and almost impossible to find. the kit gives you an alternative and comes with all the parts needed to upgrade if your old manifolds are too rusted or have cracks on them.

click on the link, next year i am hoping to upgrade mine- i have a small external leak in one of my manifolds

Re: ford or omc 5.0 interchange

I replaced my '75 302 with a 2001 Explorer roller cam 5.0. It only had about 35K miles on it. I never even cracked the heads. I tore off the fuel injection, installed a '69 351 reground roller cam, installed a Holley Marine 4160 carb then hung all the original stuff back on it, including the 30+ year old log style exhaust manifolds.

That thing runs like a striped *** ape. I still have not held it WOT. It scares me to death.

Nice thing about the late Explorer roller cam motors is that they use Ford's last, latest and greatest breathing heads, the GT40P's. Using those heads in a lot of cars are a real headache because they changed the angle of the spark plugs from all previous Ford heads. They now stick straight out which is absolutely fabulous for a marine engine with upswept exhaust manifolds. Now I can stick a socket straight onto the plug and no longer have to use a box end wrench.

It makes me sick how many of those beautiful 5.0's got ruined and sent to the crusher in our great and wise President's 'cash for clunkers' program.
