Ok "Tech" Guys... Can someone please inform me of the difference between the automotive and marine versions of the Ford Tfi distributor used on Efi applications such as 1994 and up 5.0 litre OMC Cobra?....

I am converting a 5.0 liter with efi for use on a 21' open fisherman with a straight inboard.. I'm very framiliar with the Ford EEC IV efi system and how it operates so thats not really an issue...

I would be open to any suggestions towards any other areas where "marine" parts (injectors, fuel pressure regulartor, wireing harness, ect.) might come into play with this engine...

I already have the marine starter, alternator, exhaust, and flame arrestor areas covered...

Thanks for any info...

I dare say that the lack of responses to your query is not because no one is looking, it's because for most non-pro's [and a few pro's too] electronic fuel injection is sort of a black magic thing. Most people can grasp the workings of simple mechanical devices, such as a carburetor, but the workings inside those ecm's are a complete mystery. You said you were familiar with the EEC 4 system, so that puts you out in front of most people, myself included.
I'ts the same reason very few people work on their own cars anymore.

Thanks Coupedeville... I kind of figured the "black majic thing" was the reason behind the lack of responses... To me EFI is so much easier to work with (I have the tools) than the old "carb & points"... Heck, the ecm will tell you whats wrong with the system if you have the scan tools which takes out SOME of the guess work in diagnosing problems... That being said, I still have'nt figured out the new OBD2 system on the new cars... For me OBD2 is way out there, but I'll figure it out...

I wish I new someone with a OMC Cobra 5.0 or 5.8 efi I/O I could look at so I could find out if the distributor is the same as the automotive version so I'm U.S.C.G. compliant... Even the distributor OMC part # might help?.... I don't want to blow myself up, ya know... :)

Snapperbait,
the differences are basicly the same for all of the "Marine" Ele. parts.... they Have to be shielded so there's no chance of sparks... Dist.s are vented thru a screen, just like the alt... the starter has an Extra plate inside the housing... i don't know if you would be compliant, but you'd be Safe, with sheilded venting of your dist. of choice..... i'm not saying that you should use "car" parts, but it sounds like you have More than a cresent wrench,+ a pair of vicegrips in your toolbox.... my boat doesn't seem to mind having a "pickup" motor in it... 515hrs. + counting.... use your knowledge wisely,+ be safe... Common Sense is the only regulation that really counts...
