I have a 1992 50 hp Force with CD ignition which has very low hours due to life on a boatlift and no use. After rebuilding carb.,fuel pump & waterpump the engine ran great for several trips. When approaching the dock and putting it into neutral, the engine stalled and would not restart.Since then engine will start only with the fast idle lever all of the way up and will proceed to idle OK,when it is shut off, it will not restart until you place your hand in front of the carb and "choke" the engine.I want to run a compression test and vacuum test, how do I perform the vacuum test?

If choking the engine by hand helps you could have an air leak in your fuel system. Check the carb and make sure it is on the block tight. It could sucking air in at the base and cause much trouble. Check all you fuel lines also, especially at the inline fuel filter.

Hope this helps :)

Well,my compression test was good, with 144psi in #1 cyl.,and 140psi in #2.Hoses have been replaced throughout,I'm wondering about the crankshaft seals due to the fact that this engine sat for years in the Fla. sun, although it was run a few times each year.It apparently has an airleak, how would I pressure/vacuum test this engine (crankcase)?

When you put your hand over the throat of the carb does it suck it in pretty good when cranking?? Also, take the hose off the carb and put it in a cup and crank. Are you getting good fuel supply?? Lastly, you may want to look at the simple things first. My first shot would be to pull that carb and ensure my idle circuit was not clogged, the float needle is working correctly and that my idle screw is set correctly.

Even though you rebuilt carb, it sure sounds like and idle circuit issue..
