Hello, new here.I have been reading your forums getting info on a motor that is on my boat that I recently purchased. It gets strong spark and backfires when the starter is engaged but none when not engaged .the boat has sat for 3 years and I've been going through the wiring cleaning up corrosion but to no avail. From what I've read this could be a problem with the trigger?I have found a really good deal on a trigger from a 1985 force 85 and was wondering if it would work on my 87?I ordered a manual for this motor. It has not come yet and I don't want to pass up this deal plus from what it sounds it would be good to have a spare.

FIRST!!!!! Do a compression test!!!!!!!!!!!!!Don't throw parts at a problem. Wait for the manual. Come back with the comp results.J

I guess I should rephrase my question. Is it a good idea to pick up a spare trigger if I have found one at an unbeatable price as this component of the ignition is problematic? Also will a trigger from a 1985 85 force fit my 1987 85 force?thank you.

It should be the same part. But still do a compression test at the first sign of trouble.
Low comp can cause a back-fire,or a miss,hard starting, poor performance,etc

Many times an engine that has been sitting will backfire because the mixture is lean. This happens when the carbs get varnished and gunk in the jets and passageways.

Clean the carbs, put a new fuel pump diaphram, clean the plugs and check the compression. Then let us know what it is doing.

I don't know how much you are paying for a trigger, but I see them on e-bay quite a bit. I would go to iboats.com, look up a trigger for your engine, compare it to the one you are thinking about buying to see if the part numbers match. The only differances for the 1980's Force triggers are 2,3,4 or 5 cylinder and terminal strip style connectors or the plastic round plugs. I don't think yours is bad, if you have spark, good spark, its working properly. Mine backfires when I start it cold once most of the time, Then its fine the rest of the day. I heard that Force outboards are prone to backfires sometimes.

Re: force trigger 1987 force 85

I had a pair of 88/85 Force motors on my boat. They never backfired unless there was something wrong with them.
1st time was the rings were carboned up and I had to re-ring both motors.
2nd time a linkage connector broke and the timing woudn't advance.J

Hey Jerry, I just posted what I think is a similar problem as to what you had. Broken linkage and the timing is 'adrift'.

Was the linkage broken at the trigger or someplace else along the line??

I have the same motor. The trigger won't go bad, but the arm might have busted off. If it's not broken and it moves freely it should be fine. Adjust timing and move onto more serious issues. My carbs seemed perfectly friggin clean, but are being rebuilt now because mechanic says I got everything else right - but not the carbs. I hope he's right. Hate the motor - HATE IT!
