Force Stator Wiring ????

I have a 85hp Force model no.856x5l serial no.
2884 1985 model. Started the engine and it started fine, but then I shut it off and went to restart it but never started again. It had been cutting out when WOT, but this time it didn't even attempt to start back. I checked the plugs and they didn't have any fire. I noticed the blue and yellow wires coming from stator. One of the blue wires had been cut where the plug connects to the cdm and spliced into the other blue wire. It has two sets of wires: blue and yellow to one cdm and the other set to the other cdm. So in other words one cdm has two blues and one yellow and the other has one yellow but no blue. Is this wired right?? It's a 6 wire stator. Is it fried? ohms read 1.4 when I checked resistance. It's supposed to be 0.5-1.0
It's a prestolite system so it says on the flywheel  Wiring diagram would be appreciated. :)

Re: Force Stator Wiring ????

The 85 Force 3 cylinder engine diagram shows that each CDM should be connected to the stator with one yellow and one blue wire. The other yellow and blue wires go to the other CDM, the last pair of wires should both be green with a yellow strip and they go to the rectifier. The wire colors from the stator will match the wire colors from the CDM units. The manual shows 2 different systems, one called system "A" with plug connectors, and system "B" uses terminal strips. Both systems use the same wire colors. The manual says the resistance from the yellow to blue wire should be 675-800 ohms. It appears that someone tried to let one stator winding power both CDM units and it didn't work. Check both pair of yellow and blue stator wires, I would bet that one set is open with infinite resistance. Good luck.

Thanks slowly sinking I tried checking the ohms between the yellow and blue wires. I have a digital meter my lowest setting on the ohms setting is 200.I checked the blue and yellow wires and the meter showed nothing.Does that mean its burnt? Before it quit it ran fine at 3/4 throttle and cut out at WOT. Thanks Again :)

Re: Force Stator Wiring ????

cupper_3, just to make sure, when you say the meter shows nothing do you mean it shows the same as when the meter probes are not touching as compared to reading a bunch of zeros when the probes are touching. I don't mean to insult your intelligence but I also don't want to mislead you. Did you check both stator windings? If you checked both and both show nothing it looks like both stator windings are open and useless. The reason it ran is the previous owner apparently wired both CDM units to one stator winding and the one stator winding produced enough power to run both CDM units until full RPM's where it simply ran out of electrical power to operate both CDM's. If you check and both stator windings are open it appears that the overload may have wiped out the second stator winding. Here's how it works, the stator produces an alternating voltage (AC) voltage when the engine is spinning, the AC is fed to the CDM units with the yellow and blue wires, the CDM unit stores it in a capacitor, when the trigger unit is activated by the magnets under the flywheel it produces a signal voltage when the spark plugs need to fire, that signal voltage causes the CDM to release the stored energy into the ignition coil which produces the 20-40 or so thousand volts and fires the spark plugs. Check carefully and good luck.

Look for a Rapair sticker on the stator, these replacement stators not always wired same as orignal.

Thanks clanton there is no labels on the stator that i can find.it looks like the factory one that come on it.But i idont know that .I believe its been rigged just to keep it going .you know a cheap fix that wont last .Anyway i found a used stator on ebay should be mailed monday.I have been around boats alot but this is my first. Thanks for the help
