My buddy and I just bought a bass boat with a 1988 50hp force outboard motor 2 stroke. It started good when we launched it but after a couple of minutes it turned off and couldnt turn it on again. We saw that the tell tale was closed from a little valve that it has....could that have been the problem. Also we saw that either gasoline or oil was coming out of the water. Any ideas on what it could be.

Re: Force motor wont start!! Help!!!!

Could be lots of things but best way to sort things out is to start with the basics. Compression check & spark test.

If you go to the ?Engine Repair and Maintenance? heading of this forum and the select ?Engine Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)? you will find a thread called ?Compression test by JB?. This will show how to perform a compression test.

An inline spark tester is handy for checking out how well your coils are working.

Post your results.

If these check out OK its time to move on to the fuel supply.

As the motor is new to you these tests will give you an idea of what condition the motor is in.

Good Luck

Re: Force motor wont start!! Help!!!!

There are 3 things that the engine needs to run

1. Sparks
2. Fuel
3. Compression

You need to check these to ensure that you have all 3. By your description of fuel coming out of the exhaust into the water indicates that you probably have plenty of fuel so it's time to test for a spark. Remove all the spark plugs and connect them using some bare wire wrapped around the threads to a bolt on the engine and spin the engine on the starter - check that all the plugs are sparking.

Whilst you are at it, if you don't have a compression tester (Harbor Freight sells them for $15 or less) put a thumb over each spark plug hole and feel for compression as you spin it - compression determines how well the engine will run but it will run with low compression, just not very well.

When you know the answers to these, report back and we can suggest the next step.
