Ive got a 1995 force 70 hp,and i have torn down the lower unit, for replacement of seals and any worn parts,(clutch dog etc),because its jumping out of forward gear under a heavy load.ive got the prop shaft and carrier removed along with the gear attached.I need to know how to remove the drive shaft from the gearcase.Ive removed them from other lowers before but not sure how this one comes out,and i dont want to harm anything in the process.any help will be appreciated! thanks for any knowledge.

Re: force lower unit

Usually, on those Merc designed lower units, you remove the pinion by putting the correct socket on the pinion nut on a breaker bar. Pad the breaker bar with soft wood or cloths to prevent damaging the aluminum case. Then make a tool or if you can find an old Merc crankshaft, use it to turn the shaft and spin off the pinion nut.

Now, below the water pump there will be a screw-in collar similar to the one behind the prop but smaller. It locates the upper shaft bearing. Remove the water pump assembly and unscrew the collar. The shaft and bearing cone will slip right out. The bearing cup is upside down and will also come out. There are shims under the cone. DO NOT LOSE OR DAMAGE THEM! They are no longer available. There are loose rollers in the lower bearing so expect them to fall out into the gearcase. The pinion may be "locked" onto the taper and you may need to wedge it off before pulling the shaft.

That is the one thing I do not like about the Merc designed lower. While the gears are a bit "meatier" than earlier Force gears, gear teeth are cut in the opposite direction and gear thrust loads are transmitted upwards against the screw-in collar. Because the cone is upside down, the thin edge is the shimmed edge and it is easier to damage or incorrectly install the shims.

frank, is this collar underneath the waterpump,is it made of a type of composite matrial, kindof like bakelite,or maybe plastic?also there is a small set screw type plug underneath the water pump, is it needed to be removed also?Oh and i di remove the pinion nut in the manner you described and it worked well.one more thing is the collar normal or reverse threads?

If your drive dog and gears (area where the drive dog engages) are worn, and the gear teeth are still good, they can be re-machined so they stay together when under a load. Send me a private message if you need this machining process done. It can same loads of money over buying new gears.

No. The plastic or composite is the lower plate for the water pump. The screw-in collar is metal and below that pump plate. And yes, it is kind-of like a set screw--only real big. the gearcase is threaded and it screws into the gearcase. It screws out in normal direction but I don't remember if there is a "keeper" that must be unbent to allow you to unscrew it. You will see it if it is there.
