Force Outboard
Model # 357FC6A
Year----1986
Serial # 1005

This motor runs great at full throttle, but when trolling at speeds of about 3 mph, it will cut off after about 5min. of trolling.
I will have to take it out of gear, then advance the throttle a bit to get it started again then engage the gear to get going again. Some times when I get it started and as soon as I engage the gear it will shut off.
Could this be caused by using a 50:1 gas oil mixture?
I need to find this problem because I love trolling.
Thanks for any help
Terry

Re: Force Idling problems

You will want to add 1oz of Mercury QUICKLEEN/5imp gal gas. Sounds like the rings are carboning up and the compression is suffering. The Force engins are prone to this fault and trolling with them is problematic. I have an 85HP Force and must clean the plugs regularly after 25 gals. The type of oil to use is Walmart 2000 2-stroke W-3 or Canadian Tire 2-stroke W-3. Both are cheap but at 50 to 1 don't smoke and do a fine job.

Charger 183 is right. After that raise the idle SPEED. The bolt buts up to the engine block at the bottom of the tower shaft. Don't change the idle mixture screws.

I have the same motor as you do. my motor seems to smoke more then other 2 cycle motors. does yours. I also had trouble with ideling so I turned the the idel speed up. I used Quick Silver
2 cycle oil,it should be a good oil at 50/1
but boy does she smoke.

Joe

Re: Force Idling problems

Thanks for all the replys.
Hickox: I use Mercury 2 cycle oil and my motor smokes more than other motors, in my opinion.
The compression on both cylinders is approximately 125psi.
I have experimented with adjusting the idle speed but without success. I would like to know if I should lower the Oil/fuel ratio a bit from 50:1 to say 40:1, would this be safe for the engine?
I love this engine it is so simple to work on and I get about 28mph wide open throttle, on a 16" aluminum, with three batteries in the boat.
Terry

Re: Force Idling problems

I am with you It's a nice little motor. I have mine on a 16 aluminum also. I have played with the air mix screw with no luck on lowering the smoking issue. maybe thats just the way it is.
Mine would shut down when it warmed up so I raised the rpm with the linkage. If I was going
to troll with this motor I think I would have to get a gas mask, well maybe not quite that bad. I have a little 1.5 Gas motor that I troll with.
It's a little quiter. Happy Trolling

Joe

DON'T change the oil/gas mixture ratio. Try some decarbonization, Quicksilver Power Tune, to increase your compression.

Hi,
My 125 force had th same problem,on advice from this panel I've adjusted the mixture screws to just over 1 turn from closed, they were about 1.5 turns, its now a different engine, runs smooth at low rpm with no stalling going into gear.Like Sony says dont change the oil ratio.

Thanks ShadeAde:
That sounds logical, I am going to do just that tomorrow and let you know how it works.
Thanks again for the reply.
Terry

Re: Force Idling problems

Another thing that could cause this is an exhaust leak under the cowling. You could try trolling it with he cover off to make sure no exhaust is leaking, if it is then it will drownd out the motor. I had this happen on my 88 Force 125 HP.

Its worth a shot, cause mine would run fine a t WOT, cause the air was getting circulated through the cover enough to push it out, but when in idle it was smoking pretty good cause of that.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Thanks Bryan for the reply:
I have never thought about that, makes me wonder though, because when trolling it smokes so much I can hardly breathe and my wife has to move to the bow of the boat.I will check that out as well.
The impression I get from reading several posts on this forum is that the older Force motors were not designed for low speed trolling. Am I correct?
Thanks
Terry

Tesmel,
What you can do to find out if the exhaust has a leak, is stop the boat, take the cowling off, then begin to cruise along at your trolling speed. If it stays running or runs better you probably have an exhaust leak. Mine was in the little pee hole snout that comes from the engine out of the cowling. Give that a shot and see what happens, if that part is leaking, you should also see water leaking down in the bottom of the leg.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Re: Force Idling problems

Tesmel,

An exaught leak is a defenate possibility. Howerver, something that has not yet been mentioned. It is possible that the fuel pump is not pumping enough fuel at low RPMs. This could cause it to die about every five minutes. I am not sure exactly how to test that. Maybe pump the fuel bulb every minute or two while trolling and see if it resolves the problem. It's not the fix, but it might help determine what is wrong.

I have a 1990 90hp Force. There are a lot of people that don't speak highly of Force, but mine has been nothing but good to me.

Re: Force Idling problems

Terry,
I have an identical problem with an identical motor. had it out trolling this week and saw the same things you see. Let me know what works out for you. This thread has given me lots of ideas. I think that I remember taking off the cover at idle and the motor settled down and ran better. I will probably persue the idea of an exhaust leak first. Do the manuals cover this? I have the seloc but haven't looked yet...
Mic

Re: Force Idling problems

I'm pretty sure my '89 Force 50 has an exhaust leak under the cover. Seems to be coming from under the exhaust port cover. Is there any solution without trying to remove the exhaust port cover and risking snapping off the screws (seems to happen a lot on old outboards). I had thought about ventilating the motor cover to allow more fresh air in during idle.
