Ok here goes. I have a 1989 Force 85hp on a 17ft Bayliner Capri. When i bought the boat it ran great. After a few times out she started sputtering and had a tremendous power loss for the first 20 minutes or so then would start spitting and jumping then gain full power again. Finally it wouldn't even do that anymore. I posted that and was told it was probably the carbs. I just had the carbs rebuilt, new water pump and impeller put on the boat along with new plugs. I put the boat on the lake today it started sputtering for about 30 seconds then hit full throttle. When I left my destination it did the same thing. After about 20 minutes of travelling it just lost power like I pulled back on the throttle but I hadn't touched it. It then ran about 8mph until I got back to the dock. It then idled like garbage and had somewhat of a "knocking" noise. What in the world could cause this now after having the work done? Also it runs fine when its not under a load, i.e. when its in the yard with a bucket under the motor.

almost sounds like something electrical!!!!! have you done a comression test on it? if so what were the readings, checked the spark from plug/wires.

Fuel pump diaphram/reeds.Check these first.
Then a compression/spark test.J

check your stator, had the same prob on my old 85 hp, the coils in the stator would go intermintant causing power loss to one of the mods thus running on two cylinders, you have three sections of the stator, two sections to power the mods, one section for each mod the other to charge the battery, take a volt ohm meter find the yellow blue wires coming from the stator on your terminal strip mounted under your mods, they should be to far left of the terminal strip you'll see two of the wires coupled together cant remember if its the yell or blue, now put the meter on ohms and take one probe and put it on the two wires that are coupled together and the other probe on the one next to it and do the same for the other other wire on the other side a good stator should read 600 to 800 ohms

The compression test was good. All cylinders were between 120 and 130. I have gone through the entire fuel system and replaced all hoses when I bought the boat and have since used nonethanol gas as I was warned when I bought the boat about the damage ethanol can do. I do have spark on each cylinder, however I put new plugs in the motor about two months ago and all three were cracked when I took the motor to have the carbs rebuilt. I will check the stator as soon as I get a chance.

when the boat cuts out does the power surge and hit fast then die off or does it bog... if it bogs or makes a droning sound its likely carb or fuel related.. if it surges quickly on and off and will all the sudden cut in and out its electrical.

does you stator have really thin wire? if so its likely original and most likely the problem.

The thing is weak spark will allow the motor to run well when there is no load. when you place a load on a motor with weak spark it will fail and not rev out and or smoke.

When it starts messing up in the water its probably about 10 very quick power surges then it finally catches and goes. There is a lot of smoke when I first crank the motor up is this not normal? I thought due to the two stroke motor and its age it would smoke pretty bad when it first cranked up. After I start going it doesn't smoke anymore. The stator on the boat is the original. Should I just go ahead and replace that? I really dont want to dump a lot of money into this motor and have the option to buy a 1994 Mercury 115hp that I know has been well cared for, for $1,000.00 Would it be more worth my time and money to just go ahead and get that motor?

Make sure your fuel line fittings are tight. I had similar issues and was at my wits end and that's all it ended up being.......
