force gearhousing installion now no reverse

1985 50 hp force outboard replaced waterpump (first time)impeller, now I have no reverse just 2 fowards I tried to put linkage back right where it was . I could of tweaked linkage a little taking it apart I had it in neutral when I put it back together should it been in foward?did I screw up the bottom end some how or just not doing something right might just need adjusted a little?<br />Please help thanks Brett

the adjustment is off, its not much fun to do this if you didnt ocund and make a bnote of the threads on the adjusting nut before hand.<br /><br />dont run it as is, it might cause alot of wear.<br /><br />take the linkage apart and try and find all 3 gear selector positions, and then try and adjust the linkage so nuetral is close to eh middle of the adjustment, and it isnt at the extreeme for Forward or reverse.<br /><br />the first time I did my 88 Force 50, I didnt count the threads, and it took me about an hour of adjusting ( mostly spent cussing, and throwing tools)<br /><br />but I finally got it workable<br /><br />good luck!<br /><br />if all else fails take to a shop, and let an experienced outboard mechanic do it, your lower unit may be at risk
