I have a friend that has a 90hp force outboard. It will start and run not bad when cold, however after it has run for about 5 - 10 minutes it idles fine but when you try to put it in gear it dies out. You can put it to fast idle no problem.

It has been to the boat repair shop and they cleaned the carbs and resync'd the carbs but still no difference.

When it is warm it just is a royal pain in the butt.

Once it is in gear and stays running it seems fine. The idle speed is ok. When it was in the shop the spark plugs where replaced and the compression checked.

Any suggestons - Did these engines have electronic module issues? That is about all it can be that I can think of.

Thanks for any help.
My friend is about at the stage to take it for a run with the plug out of it. ;)

I haven't yet had a reply so does anyone have suggestions of other forum type links I can try for assistance?

Are you certain that the idle air/fuel mixture is correct -- probably one turn out. Otherwise, you could try the marinedoctor.com

Check the wires for the safety lanyard/kill switch in the controls.
Could be a loose wire shrting out and killing the engine while you are shifting into gear.

??

Re: Force dies out

Some electrical parts such as coils and stators start showing signs of failure when they heat up. When the motor is hot test each cylinder for spark. Also test the compression when it is hot. I know you mentioned it was checked in the shop but I doubt it was tested when the motor was hot. After motor is hot and starts crapping out check the spark plugs. What do they look like. When motor tries to kill going into forward gear will choking it help or does it just kill the motor

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My friend replaced the ignition module and all is now well.
I would have bet my left arm this problem wasn't ignition related.

thanks once again.
