mod# 92F98 ser# 1296 Tiller. I think the linkage has been tampered with.
Instructions say, place slide in nutral, turn throttle to full .Problem is that the throttle is locked in thet position. To get the throttle to open I have to move the slide forward but then that takes it out of neutral and engages the drive. It will start in neutral if I reach in and manualy hold the throttle open. The more I look at the starboard linkage the more confused I get. Also is this a 1992 ?
I just picked this thing up and do not have a manual.
Thank`s for any help you may offer short of " just pitch it ".

Re: Force 9.9 Starting problem

Patrick;

Are you sure of the model number or could it be 92F9B instead of F98?

Also the s/n is missing a few numbers.

Re: Force 9.9 Starting problem

Gerry,I checked the #`s,this time with glasses.Guess what ?
Mod# 92F9A , ser# 1296,must be a real early model.Looking at it again,if I slide the lever from nutrel to forward far enough to release the throttle ,the lock paw closes on the recoil starter and can not be pulled. This has to be a simple linkage adjustment.
Thank`s for the come back.

Bad instructions...
- close throttle
- Put gear shift in nuetral
- Turn throttle to fast idle (as far open the throttle will turn in nuetral, maybe 1/8 open)

My procedure for a cold outboard:
- throttle closed
- shifter to nuetral
- throttle to fast idle
- pump primer bulb firm
- choke closed
- push cold start primer 2 times (don't know correct term, rubber button on from of outboard
- pull start
- open choke as engine warms
- close throttle as engine warms
- outboard should be purring in 30 - 60 seconds

Re: Force 9.9 Starting problem

Dan,I agree with your starting procedure .Problem is that when the shifter is in neutral tha throttle can not be turned open.On the starboard side of the engine there is a black rocker arm that the back controls the starter paw and the frount locks the throttle slide. The throttle lock will only open when the shifter slide is pushed to forward but then this locks the paw on the recoil starter and wont allow it to be pulled. If you look on the side of your 7.5 maybe it is the same.

Re: Force 9.9 Starting problem

Gerry,

Thank`s for the link.
So it is a 1989.
Read my reply to Dan.
I fooled with that linkage for 2 hours yesterday
and finally had to walk away.
I am about to go the "Rube Goldberg" route and bend the throttle restrictor plate out of the way but that is a little drastic.

Re: Force 9.9 Starting problem

I have just acquired a Force Gamefisher 9.9, Can someone advise me if I can dispose of the primer bulb and use an in-line bulb like my Evinrude uses. I have issues getting it started. I live in Scotland and I have not found any spares suppliers to date in the UK, can someone advise please.
