Re: FORCE 85

If its a fresh rebuild, you should be running double oil for breakin.
Its gonna smoke awful, but you need 5 ounces of TCW-3 oil, per gallon of gas, for the first 10 hours after rebuild.

Gotta ask some questions to get us headed in the right direction.

Does the boat have a tach?
If so, what are the rpm's when you reach max speed?

Have you checked for spark and compression on all 3 cylinders?

What is the condition of the prop, all banged up or pretty straight and nice?

Is the boat crrying any extra weight, is the hull or floatation foam waterlogged?

Re: FORCE 85

30mph sounds pretty good for that motor and that size boat.

You said the accelleration was slow. How long does it take to get up on plane when you hit the throttle? 10 seconds? 20 ? 30 ?

Gas consumption seems high. Would expect 7-8 gallons per hour if running at wide open throttle, about 5 per hour at 3500rpm.

If you're gonna do any work on it, you really should get a Clymer Force Repair manual.

I would:
Check compression.
Put in new plugs.
Change water pump impeller.
Change lower unit lube.
Replace fuel pump diaphram and gaskets. Get them from NAPA, or a Merc dealer. Parts are about $10

Fuel pump leaking into the powerhead may be what is causing the high fuel consumption. Pretty common. Eventually it will leak bad enough that the engine will flood, and not start.

Setting carb idle mixture is pretty easy, just don't run it lean.
If your motor is 1984-1988, the starting point is 1.25 turns out from seated. If it dies when you accellerate, it is too lean. You want it to stutter/hesitate a little, then take off.

Don't mess with the throttle/timing advance tower until you have a manual in hand, and have read it.

If the boat doesn't have a tach, consider getting one. You need a "20 pole" tach. Use the tach and measure WOT rpm (wide open throttle). Use the rpm info to determine what pitch prop you need.

Sounds like you got a boat that runs, for free. Who wouldn't want a boat that runs, for free? I mean, its a boat, and it runs, for free. Cool.

The trick is to keep it running. :)

Don't hesitate to ask for help.
