Force 50HP poping out of gear?

Hi,
I have a problem with my 1990 Force 50HP. The problem is once I open it up and get between 3/4 to full throttle it runs fine for about 10-15 seconds and then what "seems" to happen is it pop's out of gear into neutral and the rev's shoot way up. I throttle back into neutral and it's fine again. That is, until I go to 3/4's again and it kick's out again. I took it to the local shop and they thought the prop was spun, but it wasn't. They could not find anything wrong. The only work done to it prior to this problem was the lower units was removed and replace to have some seals replaced. Related?
Any suggestions out there.

Seals probably arent related. My guess is your forward gear and clutch dog are worn in your lower unit. The faces on the clutch and gear wear down and become smooth so when you put torque on them they slip and drop into neutral. The gear and the clutch are about 350 american dollars. I would take them apart and take them to a machine shop to reface them. It has to be a lot cheaper than replacing them.

Re: Force 50HP poping out of gear?

Hey Norton!!
I have had a similar problem in the past with my '96 40hp Force on a 20' pontoon. After a couple trips to the marina for "cable adjustments" $$$ and then a new prop, with no results. I checked this sight. Getting good information here, seems the motor sits a little high with my pontoon and if it not trimmed down properly the motor developes a cavitation at higher speeds under load. I thought it was popping out of gear but it is cavitation.
Hope this helps.

Shifty

Well after poking around this sight, one lad suggested to mark the inside prop housing with a marker or something to verify if the prop was spun or not. Well go figure, I tried it and sure enough the lines were not lined up anymoreafter it acted up again. So the prop was spun after all. Jeez, this leaves me a good feeling about the shop that I took it to that said it was not the prop.
I guess I should be happy though that it is a relatively cheap fix.
Thanks for your suggestions guys.
This is a great site for info!

Norton
