Noticed a leak from the water intake after transporting engine on its side - never leaked standing straight up on its stand after winterized. I spoke with a Force mechanic today and he said get pressure + vacuum test to check for leakage location of seal - if it fails - get a new reseal kit for gear housing - same seal adjacent to water pump or different? - this is my first motor, and it is clean, but sat for a while-guess a seal dry rotted, being above the highest lubricant level perhaps w/ eingine upright? I suppose I should get the water pump reseal kit as well not knowing the history of the motor, so I have a maintenance reference point of what has been done - also new spark plugs of course- anything else you guys would suggest for preventive maintenance and general reliability / safety besides carburetor rebuild? I was given water pump reseal kit cost of $57.25 at 1.5 hrs. labor and gear housing reseal kit price of $15.70 at 1 hr. labor - carburetor rebuild hours for this 1-barrel carb. 2-piston engine of 2 hrs. - not sure what the carb kit should cost - Are these prices in the reasonable ballpark - fair?

--------------------
Inquizito needs to know...

Inquizito,Im not an expert but all seems within
reason.
You may want to consider trading up to a name brand motor.Your Force is an orphan.
Mercury just announced they will no longer
support parts for Force.
generic parts will be around for some time but
some motor specific parts have allready started to dry up.

Thanks for your response - always get a kick out of your signature line - manuals are essential-have the Chiltons or Haynes for all the cars I have, but what is a good brand for 1987 Force 50 - or do the dealers make the only ones worthwhile.

Yes, sadly the case with the orphaned motor, but there are going to be aftermarket OEM suppliers who will pursue the market in the interest of monopolizing profits - I hope - it seems ou can always count on greed in America. If you have a Force motor, or know of anyone who may need anything for one, you will find most all them all at www.maxrules - including major engine components- they only deal in Chrysler-Force. And www.marinesuupermart.com has many parts, but maybe not as much Force. The local dealer may not have them though, and eventually the Force-knowledgeable technician will be a very scarce. Hopefully, good maintenance will keep me free of major expense and the need to find obsolete, unavailable parts. This is the first motor I have gotten, on my first boat...got the motor last Saturday, so I am having it gone over by our Force dealer here. Maybe it will serve me well.
