Force 50 surges

My Force 50 seems to be running a little funny. When it's idling, it will occasionally miss and almost stall but then return to idle. When i'm out on the lake I can run at WOT but occasionally it will speed up slightly by 1 - 2 MPH then settle back down. I recently had the carburator and fuel pump cleaned and rebuilt and put new plugs in so I am not sure what could be causing this... Spark problem maybe?

Ok, after reading through the forums, I think I was describing my "surging" problem incorrectly. It's more of a "coughing" at idle and low speeds. Others have indicated this to be a timing issue and the motor is actually backfiring? Does this sound right? How do I adjust timing?
