Force 20+ years 50Hp - won't propel forward

Hi,

I have a Force 50hp engine. It is about 20 years old (if not more).
It was working perfectly fine 2 weeks ago, but when I started it this weekend, the motor would only propel in reverse.
When I put the motor into drive/forward, the propeller do not seem to move, however the engine will continue to rev as we give more gas.

I've taken the cover off and think the shift is reaching/engaging all 3 gears.

Can someone please advise what else I should be checking for or what I can/should do?

Thanks!

While the experienced and pros tune in.

1. Did you drain the lower unit?s gear oil to look for signs of wear etc?

2. Did you shift through the gears manually on the leg disconnected from the control if needed vs Resistance to see and feel good movement? Versus it ran fine 2 weeks ago.

3. Hopefully it?s a linkage or control matter. Good Luck! JOW

Check the prop for slippage. It will work in reverse but slip in forward.Mark the hub and then try it.
Do the oil drain like wickware said. Look for excess metal shavings.J

Thank you Jerry and Wickware so much for the rapid response.
I don't know much about boat repair, but will look into the solutions provided.

Would you know where I can find the repair manual for this boat or maybe just an owner's manual?
that way I can see many some illustrations, so I know which part to take apart.

Thanks!!

I just ordered a Factory Service Manual from "The Bay" (ebay) for $20.00
While I was searching, I came across several retailers that carry both the
Clymer and the Seloc manuals for these motors. FYI

There are some fair service manuals out there. I feel many Marinas will have Clyner's Chrysler/Force Outboard Shop Manuals that have served me well. I have also found the Clymer manuals in the Public Libraries. If you have not done much servicing to your lower unit?s propeller area, you really want to check a manual before removing any screws. To be sure you are removing a drain plug vs a pivot pin. Have you had the impeller in the water pump replaced lately? JOW
