Hello,
I bought a boat that had most of the ignition components replaced. The flywheel was broken while being removed. A used replacement was purchased off e-bay. The new one has one continuous magnet inside the flywheel. I never seen the original flywheel to see if the magnets were segmented or not. Does anyone know if this matters or if my engine now has the wrong one on it??? Thanks!

Re: Force 1986 125 hp flywheel compatibility.

Every flywheel from late 1979 Chrysler to at least 1990 Force both 3 and 4 cylinder models had a flexible continuous magnet inside the rim. All flywheels regardless of color are interchangeable with the exception of the Chrysler 2 cylinder models, which while they looked the same, had the (center) trigger magnet placed differently. The only other exception MAY be the 3 cylinder 70 horsepower Force.

So, unless your replacement flywheel is one of the exceptions, it will work perfectly.

However, when you install it, it is important to first check the contact between the crankshaft and the flywheel hub. You do this by drawing pencil lines vertically on the tapered crankshaft snout where the flywheel hub sits. you then lower the flywheel onto it without the key and turn it a few times. At least 80% of the lines should be rubbed off. If not, buy some lapping compound and lap the hub to the snout. Don't get too happy with the compound or the hub may be enlarged too much.

Clean everything and install the flywheel with the key. Torque the nut to 95 foot pounds. ( if you don't have a torque wrench, borrow one--it is very difficult to tighten the 15/16 nut adequately with a hand wrench or even a regular 1/2 inch drive socket wrench) Too little torque and the engine will throw the flywheel, breaking the key. This causes the timing to change. The engine may then start but have no power, or it may not start at all.
