Force 125 Trim Motor working, but I think it should go higher

Resurrecting this motor. Seems like the trim should lift higher. There is a stainless support that slides in to hold the motor up during transit. I figure the trim motor should at least clear that.

The motor might need some fluid.
The 125 used a Prestolite pump.
The bottom half is the reservoir the top half is the electric motor.
The reservoir is filled when the motor is in the down position.
Remove the fill plug and add 30w motor oil until it runs out the hole.
Filling it while up can ruin the electric motor.
Lubricate the stainless rams or rods with White Lithium Grease.

It does seem to be leaking - drops down from high to low in about 60 seconds. I assumes there is a kit to replace the seals in this?

At the top of this forum in the FAQ section there are a couple threads about trouble shooting the T&T system.......usually the leak down is caused by bad seals in the valve body at the bottom of the pump assembly.

ONE IMPORTANT THING!!!! There is NOTHING in the actual pump that you can fix, NOTHING!!!
The seals that usually leak aren't part of the pump.
It's real easy to screw up the T@T be extra careful when taking it apart.
IF??? it's ever been in salt water?? That can make the job extra hard or impossible to fix.
The pump and seal assy. can be bought on Ebay but 50 % fail real fast.
Like Topgun said look at the 5 posts listed in this repair forum, lots of good info.

A couple of things. Most PTT systems have a trim limit switch. It can be adjusted to allow the trim up higher or down lower.

Also, most PTT systems have a manual release valve. If you have one, make sure it is tight. If loose, the motor can usually drop.

The crowleymarine site should have parts list for the motor. You can look for the manual release and trim limit switch.

Chris1956 his pump doesn't have either one of the things you describe.
His manual release is undoing the front hydraulic line where it goes into the front of the pump.

OK, I was too lazy to look it up, and since it is a Mercury PPT, I would think, I thought it had a good chance for one of those things to be the issue. Not going up enough, w/o a trim limit switch, might mean low on fluid, or that is all I can think of at this moment. Gee, even my '77 Merc PTT had a trim limit switch.

That's why Mercury was more expensive, less bells and whistles on the Force.
Yet the Force had one of the best lower units made.
If you kept the oil changed and made sure no water got in the lower lasted and lasted.
Had a pair of 88/85 30 years and never needed any work other than fresh oil.

So true, if it wasn't for those pesky plug gasket/0-rings that never completely seal :{
I think also any failures (upper driveshaft bearing) are that the oil-level is not kept to its max
