You do have the steel shifter yoke mounted on the pin, do you not?

Grease the yoke in the photo with a dollop of heavy grease and put it onto the shift shaft groove. Now push the shift rod all the way down . holding the prop shaft so the shift yoke remains vertical (that is, with the pins out to the side) slide it through the forward gear being certain that yoke engages the slots in the steel shifter and it is centered between the arms. It should push the shift rod upwards a little. Now, holding the prop shaft in tight against the forward gear, put the lower unit in its running position and operate the shift rod to check forward and reverse action. IF you do not hold the prop shaft in place, the shift assembly will come apart.

Once you have proved that the lower unit shifts properly, mount it point down and install the reverse gear and spool.

yes i did have the shifter yoke on the pin.

do i need to have the water pump housing in place? maybe thats why its coming apart?

i did a full rebuild including the water pump seals and gaskets..

after it has engaged like i did several times it just comes off. maybe i did not understand but after i get positive movement from the shift rod. do i resemble before moving it again?

i do have the the LU horizontal instead of it being vertical. i do have the yoke "U" opening pointing downward.

just seam i cant figure out how this stay solid in the unit?

thanls for the input

so for the record if anyone comes across the same problem. the answer is yes you must have the water pump housing needs to be installed with the shift rod threw the seal.

tried the pressure test failed again. some seals were not so tight in the slots guess got to go back and reseal them with some rtv gasket sealer
