On last use boat would keep stalling when putting it in to gear. Now it wont start at all,it cranks good there is fuel and there is spark on all 4.As it wants to fire it backfires through the exhaust with a big bang.Since then on futher inspection I discovered that the TOP PLUG AND CYLINDER ARE DRY.Bottom three seem to be carboned up,(new)only been in for a month.
Tried a compresion check but battery is now flat from all the previous cranking.
Please help.Any advise or suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance
Rick.

Does this have a carb for each cylinder???
On your other post you say top is dry, other 3 are OK. If the top is dry, it ain't gettin' no fuel. Please list the manifold arrangement on that 120...

Re: Force 120 top cylinder dry ? Help

If the top cylinder is dry, either the reed plate is stuck, and I'm not sure how???, or the top carb feeding the top 2 cylinders is extremely lean.
I know you say you have spark on all 4 but you cannot simulate heat when testing plugs, and heat causes alot of resistance, so I must ask when was the last time you changed plugs, and can you do a compression check again??
Another thought is are you sure the plug leads are going to the proper cylinders. for the engine to be "After-firing" (through exhaust), you have one firing way after it should, as the piston is coming down-ports exposed, but on a 2-stroke, this will usually force some back through the intake as well.
This is something you "might" see if the flywheel key was sheared and moved, changing the timing slightly.
To check this, pull the top plug, insert a pencil to contact piston and rotate flywheel in the normal direction of rotation until the piston stops, or starts to retreat on that cycle....center the flywheel as close to TDC of the piston as you can, and then look at the timing indicator...it should be within 1 degree of TDC #1...If it is, this would eleminate key shear. Let me know what you find there, and do a comp check if you can....

I would charge the battery and do a compression check. Sounds to me like you may have a little water getting into the top cylinder and has given it a good cleaning. If it is low I would inspect for head gasket leakage. Just a place to start.....

I just went back and looked at your first post. Motor had been sitting a while. Began stalling. You may have overheated and blown a head gasket. If so you need to check for cylinder wall scoring as well. After sitting for a long period of time it is always a good idea to change the water pump impeller as they have a tendency to dry out and become brittle or to take a set in shape and not pump properly. You may have checked this already but was just another idea. Wouldn't want you to correct the problem with the engine and have it happen again because ofa $20.00 impeller.
