Force 120 idling

I have a 120 1994 Force outboard. The engine runs fine when in gear. When I pull it out of gear and then go to shift into either reverse or forward the engine stalls. I really have to move the shift fast so the engine does not stop. The engine starts right up again. The engine is timed exactly right. Installed new plugs and checked all of the recirculation hoses and every thing is good there. I have used both synthetic and non synthetic oil.

I have read the threads on this so am going to increase the idle speed a couple hundred rpm. If that doesn't work will try adjusting the idle mixture. Although, there are a couple of threads that do not recommend touching the idle mixture. But, there was one person who adjusted the idle mixture by a half turn.

Out of the water you can shift it all day long and it will not stall.

Thanks

Re: Force 120 idling

Always do a compession test and a spark check.
This will insure the motors capable of running the way it's supposed to.
Some people will try to run a motor with low comp and it just won't be right and no amount of FINE tunning will help.
Fill out the profile? Location? You might be close to someone who can help.
The rpm's in gear,should be about 800rpm's
You CAN mess with the air screws.
To adjust the air/fuel screws:Remove the screw and check the taper on the end,it should be smooth.
Basic setting,1 turn out from lightly seated, turning in too hard can put a groove on the taper and ruin the needle.
Start and warm the engine.
Turn the TOP screw in 1/8th a turn. Wait 10 seconds. Then another 1/8th wait 10 seconds again.
Your waiting till the motor burns the fuel at the old setting, takes 10 seconds to burn the fuel.
Then repeat this procedure till it coughs/bucks etc.
Then back out 1/2 turn.
Then repeat on the BOTTOM carb.
Reset the RPM's again 750-800,closer to 800.
Then repeat the process.

Hey, nobody ever told me about the 10 second rule! (makes perfectly good sense)

I'm really dumbfounded by the 10 second rule whatever logic or mechanical reasoning behind it. But hey, if it works, so be it. Personally, after verifying compression and sparks, if everything is OK then I'll just do the de-carboning to see if that solves the problem.

In Jerry's post the sentence starting with "Your".

I believe what he is referring is to settle the engine rpm for each adjustment which makes an entire sense. At 900 RPM it takes way less than a second for the newly metered fuel to burn which happens at the next piston stroke after adjustment.

Beyond me. I did adjust until the expected malperfomance occured and back (ditto),Hit the middle and haven't had a malperformance since. Was just pointing you to his explaination.

Yep, it's in the service manual. Not mentioned in the owners manual.

Re: Force 120 idling

I have a Force 120 (1994 vintage). I am having idle issues related to the top cylinder not firing at low idle... any ideas?
