1. How often do you treat it with a water repellent?

2. Do you clean it with just water, or do you use something else?

My trailering cover is 6 years old and all I do is spray it with water. Mine leaks a drop or two at the seams but all winter long with the plug in did not have enough water to get a single drop of water out when I pulled the plug this spring.

There are a few factors that will determine how often it needs to be waterproofed. If it is a color that needs to be cleaned then you will need to re-waterproof it when done cleaning it.Usually a dark colored true Sunbrella fabric does not need to be cleaned each year because you dont see any dirt and the fabric will stay waterproofed for years.I have Cadet gray which is a light color,so I have to clean it each year and rewaterproof it.The great thing about this fabric is that you can use bleach on it with no ill effects to get organic stains out of it including bird crap and mildew.Of course you have to rinse it very well when done.I actually used straight bleach to clean a cover once with no ill effects.Granted it was crappy bleach from the $ store so it was probably equivalent to a 50/50 solution which according to Raven mills is too concentrated .

What kind of water repellant should be used? Any product suggestions?

Good stuff is made by 303, go to Sunbrella link above and you will see what they recommend to re-waterproof it.

The reason I asked the question about how people clean it is because sunbrella recommends using a mild detergent to clean the material. I was wondering if car wash soap would be considered a mild detergent? This way I could wash my boat and the material without the fear of the water repellent coming off.

I don't think so, car detergent is fairly harsh. They mention Ivory flakes, mild enough to wash infant clothes, would you wash your babies clothes with car wash soap??? :) :) :)
