Hello All,

Picked up a fogging spray recommended by a few users here on the forum. Do I really have to turn on the outboard after the application?

Thanks

Re: Fogging Spray

Not unless you want to fog it all over again. The purpose of the fogging spray is to lubricate the inards of your engine for the winter. Run your motor in fresh water for 5-10 minutes to get the engine up to temperature then spray the fogging oil into the carb until the engine stalls. Let the engine sit for the winter. Start it back up in the spring and watch all the white smoke (from the fogging oil) come out the exhaust.

I was told to take out the spark pluggs spray it for 5 seconds for each cylinder, replace the spark pluggs and thrn it on for 1 minute

That's an alternate method if you prefer to run the carb dry / drain it. But don't "run" it for a minute, merely turn the flywheel over several times by hand.

Ok Thanks

So what would be the proper way of douing this? Run the out oard for 15 min and then stall it and do the plugs after or do the pluggs only?
My only concern is if I run it and stall the engine it will leave old fuel in the fuel lines and carbs

Re: Fogging Spray

You are using some type of fuel stabilizer in your fuel aren't you? Assuming you are you shouldn't have to worry about the fuel in the carb but you can drain the carb and fuel line if you want to be extra safe. Taking out the plugs and spraying in the fogging spray if done at all should be done after you spray it in the carb and stall it.

Yes I am using Stabil Ethenol treatment in every tank... I guess I can do the whole thing. Down here in st louis the weather is crazy so in 2 weeks we can have a few very nice days where I could go out.

If you have good weather by all means go out. Just refog when you get back. Fogging is really only needed if you are going to leave the engine alone for more than 2-3 months.

So in my case it's not really necessary but wouldnt hurt anything

Re: Fogging Spray

You can fog as often as you like. basically it just puts a light coating of oil on the internal metal parts which stops them from rusting and seizing. If you're going to leave your engine for months at a time then you definitely want to fog it for shorter periods of time you don't have to but it won't hurt anything if you do. My philosophy is always better safe than sorry, but if you're just leaving it for 2-3 weeks at a time then you don't have to think about it. Just remember to change the water pump impeller every other year and the gear oil at least once at the end of every season and depending on the outboard every 25-50hrs of use.

Cool thank you. Good to know all those little things. I did change the water pump last year. I didnt do it myself I had a mechanic do it. Do you think I should change it again or wait one more year?

Wait one more year it only needs to be changed every other year. What is the year make and model of your engine? I'll see if I can get you a link to a service manual for it.

Re: Fogging Spray

I don't know why people fell the need to fog a 2 stroke.....

A 2 stroke is self fogging by its nature. Choking / flooding out a 2 stroke has the same effect, if not better, than fogging.

Some people just follow the manufacturer's recommendations detailed in the owner's manual.

And a motor that sits for only two to three months really doesn't need any attention other than using fuel system treatment on a regular basis. Running a carb dry is impossible. there will always be a little in the float bowl. No need to run it dry.

Re: Fogging Spray

A 2 stroke outboard running a 50:1 gas/oil mixture may or may not end up with enough oil on the crank/journals to prevent corrosion....so fogging is just a way to coat all those bearings and internal shiny parts with a special corrosion resistant oil to help prevent corrosion during lay-ups, especially in damp/marine/saltwater environments....Run the motor and spray the fogging oil into each carb until motor chokes on it, then drain each carb and you should be in good shape!...

Probably the same ones that change lower unit oil every 100 hours and fuel filters every 50 hours. Use brand specific fluids as a precautionary measure:laugh:

Re: Fogging Spray

Sounds good!!! Thanks. I fogged the carbs and the cylinders and replaced the spark plugs.. Turned the flywheel once around manually and put her up for storage at least for the next 3 weeks :-D

Just want to be on the safe side...
