Fogging a 5.0 GXi with MPI using an external fuel can

I've been reading through these threads the past few days and have decided on what approach I should take. I have a 5.0 Gxi with MPI. I want to do the fogging with the external fuel can with the oil mixed in. (It makes sense). So..If I connect the fuel can to the fuel pump, will the pump draw the fuel up or will I have to do some priming? Does anyone know what the size of the fitting is for the fuel line so that I can match it before I go to the boat?

No need for any priming. It will draw fuel. You need a few feet of 3/8 fuel hose. Just take the hose off the inlet to the pump, it's held on with a clamp. Put the hose you brought on the pump and the other end in the gas can and have at it.

You do not hook it directly to the fuel pump, you hook it directly to the fuel filter where the fuel tank was hooked up.
It does make it easier on the pump if you pre-fill your new fuel filter with the fogging mixture. Then install the filter, hook up your fogging tank and run the engine for the needed amount of time.
Then, when you get the engine all winterized, take your fogging oil mixture tank and pour it into the boats fuel tank. It will mix and the small amount of oil in the mix will not be a problem.

I guess I didn't explain it properly, thanks. Can't really hook it directly to the pump.

I just asked for fueline that fits on a GM engine, always good to grab a couple extra hose clamps just in case. Like Don said, it should be pretty obvious where your fuel tank hose connects to the filter. I filled my new filter with the mixture before installing and even though in the end I didn't need to do this process, (throttle body injection) it was very easy to accomplish. Good luck, Mrbill

Does it make sense to run the mixture through the old filter do all the winterizing steps and then the last step would be to fill and install the new filter? That way the filter would not have the oil in it during the winter months or am I trying to make this too complicated?

Yes you are, outboards have been running oil mixtures like this for years. That small amount of oil won't hurt any filter.

Re: Fogging a 5.0 GXi with MPI using an external fuel can

If you haven't done this already, just wanted to share my experience and a tip that I learned the hard way. I got my hose at Home Depot for only about $6 and it was slightly larger than the fuel line currently attached. Worked fine though by tightening the clamp down. Wouldn't want a permanent hose that big, but worked fine for this. It sucked the fuel right in no problem through about 3 feet of hose and ran great. I ran it for 10 min, watching the temp gauge. Here's the part to be careful with. When unhooking the external tank hose, see if you can make sure gas doesn't go everywhere. I wasn't thinking and my tank was higher than the connection so the gravity made gas go all over until I quickly raised the hose, doh. If you can make the tank lower than the connection, probably would avoid that small mess. Was able to just wipe up what I could and left the hatch open for a day to let it all evaporate and air out, no big deal in the end, but I would have rather not spilled the gas. Good luck.

I have all my supplies and plan on winterizing on Saturday. According to the forecasters, next week the weather starts cooling down in St. Louis. So getting it done when its 60 is better. I guess I can raise the tank to help prime the pump and then lower it to the cockpit floor for the rest of the steps.

Thanks for everyones help!!!
