I am going to remove the engine in my boat for a rebuild and transom repair. My question is should I yank out the two HUGE carpet covered flotation block on either side of the engine? If i take them out can i make new ones, or do i just go naked?

Looks like a bunch of wasted space to me, since you have to tear it out anyhow ,ake some usefull space out of it.

What kind of boat is that. My Chap has exactly the same shape (I'm sure many similar size runabouts do) but without the blocks. I'm sure there is plenty of foam under the floor as is 'typical'. I use that space on the port side for tube storage (deflated of coarse). My battery is also on the starboard side so I don't really use that for anything; not that it isn't useable - i just dont.

I guess I am scared about sinking.
Well, that's why it's there in the first place, so I think you are justified. If it isn't waterlogged, I would leave it alone (or put it back in place if you need to remove it for your repair job).

How in the heck do you get it out in one piece?

FYI it is a 1981 Glastron SX190

Here are some pictures.

How is the foam usually attached to the floor? I was trying to see if i could cut it out in one piece.

I would say the foam is there for flooded buoyancy to counteract engine weight and maintain level trim if flooded. Otherwise the angle of stern trim may not allow occupants to stay safely in the boat.

If needed to remove to access the transom for repairs (my computer is not showing pictures) you may be able to saw out flush with the deck and reattach with a urethane glue. Or you can recast with a two part foam kit.

It has to come out. I wonder if there is a way to rebuild it.
