i'm putting the flyweel back on my 4 hp johnson .It is a direct drive . it seams very hard to pull almost to the point that it feels like the cord is going too break. the rope starter is fine . I'm using a tourqe wrench but i don't think it is working does this sound like i'm over tourqing ???? do i need to put grease anywhere ???

Re: Flywheel ???

Are you sure there isnt a chance that the magnetos can hit the coils when you cranck ?

Did you place the flywheel correct over the key ?

Re: Flywheel ???

i don't thik so all i did was take off the flywheel to change the points and condensers . the pully works fine with the flywheel off and all the wires under the flywheel are in the correct spot so they dont hit anything, i'm tourqing it to about 36 lbs . Yes it is lined up with the key on the crankshaft . I took the flywheel off again to check it out i will start over and see it will work

Re: Flywheel ???

yes I can ,i wasn't going to start it i just wanted to check it for spark . I do have the oil out of the lower unit would that amke it harder to turn over on a direct drive???? I also noticed that one of the points was not set correctly after i pulled the flywheel off the 2 nd time . do i tighten the hold down srew then adjust the eccentric srew to get the correct gap or is the,or is the hold dow screw supposed to be lose to adjust???

>having the oil out won't effect turning resistance. A dry water pump certainly will!!

>Set the hold down screw snug but not tight. Adjust to spec. then tighten hold down screw.

Re: Flywheel ???

The last time i tried to pull start it, it was in water .Now i am just checking it for spark so it is not . It probrably is the original impeller, so maybe both of those factors are whats making the difference I will put it back together and try it in water tomorrow thanks for the help.

You were right GDANE I forgot I lossened teh one coil to put a new wick on and it was a hair off when I retightened it , I do have some small scratches on the magnets, should I sand them down a little or just leave them alone ???

Re: Flywheel ???

Not neccesary to sand, just be sure it does not touch magnetos. There should be an edge on the stator plate you can align with.

Good luck
