Flywheel touching trigger

Put a new timer base on, starts at turn of a key :)

Pulled flywheel off to double check something, and because I like like to live life on the edge...

I noticed that the inner ring appears to be rubbing on the trigger. Should I scrape the epoxy off the timer base and try to adjust trigger? It's an expensive timer base so I don't want to risk burning it up...

Anxiously awaiting a reponse. I'm ready to take this project boat out today and see if it's worth the effort...

Re: Flywheel touching trigger

The timer bases are manufactured percisely and will show evidence of factory grinding on the inner portion at times to bring the unit into specifications. I wouldn't advise tinkering with it.

The exception would be if one of the engine's main bearings were failing, allowing the crankshaft to flex somewhat, which in turn might very well allow the flywheel to hit the timerbase. Should this be the case, a overhaul of sorts would be required.

This pertains to the type timer bases that are held down on top of the block with (usually( 4 "L" type clamps. It would help in the future if you would list the year, make, and horsepower of the engine so that we know what is being discussed.

Re: Flywheel touching trigger

Sorry,
It's a 72 Johnson 50 hp electric start, electric shift. 50esl72c

The trigger has a plastic face and I can see obvious signs of rubbing both on the face of the trigger, and the inner ring of the flywheel. Not binding or anything, just a bit of rubbing.

My first thought was that it'll wear down, or already has, to a certain point and be happy, then I thought it's a $290.00 part that took over a month to get, I'd hate to burn the trigger up with friction or whatever...
