after servicing my '76 85hp evinrude i'm putting the flywheel back on and i realize the key doesn't want to go into the rounded slot on the crankshaft. won't even start enough to tap it in. please advise.

Re: flywheel to crankshaft key

File off any burrs and there should be a notch cut on one end of the key. That notch goes in the up position. Also placing the key in the freezer for awhile will sometimes help. Hope this helps

you should always use valve lap compound to fit the shaft to the flywheel, every time you take the flywheel off.
just a dab of compound to grind the two together spin back and forth by hand. clean off well before putting the fly wheel back on, or you'll likely shear off the key somewhere you don't want to swim home from.
