I have a yamaha 100 1992 4 stroke and am looking at changing the timing belt myself. Just after some advice on how to remove the flywheel. If I remove the nut that holds the flywheel on. Then use a 3 legged puller to latch under the teeth of the flywheel and tighten the puller up , finally give the top bolt of the puller a sharp hit with a hammer this will pop the flywheel off the taper . Would anyone know if this is the correct way to do it ?
Regards

Re: Flywheel Removal

The puller you plan to use is the incorrect tool, and latching it onto the flywheel teeth will likely damage, warp, the fly wheel teeth. Hitting the crank shaft with a hammer to pop the wheel loose could damage magnets attached to the to it. The puller you need is a three bolt harmonic balancer, with a centre bolt.

You need to get yourself a service manual first, and correct tools. The alignment of the cam shaft sprockets and flywheel are crucial for the motor's timing, and to ensure a misalligned camshaft does not end up sinking valves intoh the top of the cylinders.

Re: Flywheel Removal

look at your hands, do you actually have opposable thumbs?
dont be an idiot.
grab that flywheel with a 3 jaw puller on the ring gear and you will find out how expensive that flywheel is.
you WILL destroy it.
would it be to much to ask you to purchase the correct YAMAHA manual at the same time you purchase the belt ?
its a very simple procedure, however the F100 is a non-clearence motor.
screw up and you get to post about broken cams and bent valves.
at a minimum you will need a flywheel holding tool, snap-on makes a nice one for about 70 dollars, and a harmonic balancer puller with some decent 8X1.25mm bolts.
but please buy the manual. dont be a monkey.
I get to many motors that have been in the monkey den.

no
rodbolt is still mad about a bonehead customer and iboats poster that called Yamaha on me friday.
however Yamaha did not get all the story from the bonehead.
when I cool down some I will post the story.
moral is: dont be a BONEHEAD.
