What's the best way to pull off the flywheel? I have a 84 Johnson 70 hp. Is the special tool required or is there another way to do it?
Thanks

Re: Flywheel Puller

Howdy, MStritt.

This is definitely NOT the "best" way to pull a flywheel, but sometimes it is the only way available.

Back the flywheel nut off until it is flush with the end of the crank. With a brass or other soft mallet, give the end of the crank and nut a sharp rap while prying gently up on the flywheel with a large screwdriver. If you don't have a soft metal mallet, place a piece of aluminum over the crank end.

If the flywheel is stuck with corrosion this method may not work.

Good luck. :)

Re: Flywheel Puller

A harmonic balancer puller can be used. They are available at most autoparts stores for around $10. I have also seen a lot of posts stating that an air wrench is preferred, but since I don't have any, I can't say first hand, but it would make a lot of sense. As JB said, rapping on the shaft and prying on the flywheel is not recommended. Sometimes a rap on the end of the flywheel puller will be needed. Again, that is not recommended but sometimes there is no choice. Any rap on the end of the crank can hurt the bearings. We all know what you are going through. If you want the real tools, they usually are available at your local dealer, but they can be really expensive. Good luck.
