I've got a 55HP 1979 Envinrude motor. Can I make my own Flywheel Puller for this engine? I think I have the necessary tools, but not sure how the puller works or what it's supposed to hold onto. Anybody care to explain what one looks like, how it is made and how it's used to pull off flywheel. Thanks.

I supose a fella could make a puller. But it' a hole lot easier to just buy one. Just use a harmonic ballance pull available at any auto parts store.

John

I'm also toying with the idea of constructing one myself as here in Africa we do not get the harmonic balanced pullers. The basics you require is a round steel disc of about 1/2" thickness. Diameter depends on following: The flywheel has 3 threaded holes a couple of inches from the centre. The disc should cover these holes with about 1/2 " to spare on the outside.

In the centre of the disc drill a 1/2" hole and weld a 1/2" nut over the hole. Your main pulling bolt will thread through this nut and push against the crankshaft. Shape the end of the nut on a grinder to fit the small indentation on the crank end. Ensure the thread is still servicable. The disc must be used so that the nut is on the underside of the disc ie. insert the bolt from the side without the nut in order for the force to push the nut against the disc instaed of pulling it away from it.

Now drill 3 holes in the same position as the 3 on the flywheel.

To use, insert 3 bolts through the holes on the disc into the flywheel. Insert centre bolt and start tightening it. Your pull will be on the 3 bolt if the centre bolt is tightened enough.

Phew, what a mouthful. It is relatively simple to make however. Good luck.

AutoZone auto parts store will loan one to you for free. All you have to do is give a $10.00 deposit and when you return it they will give you your money back.

Re: Flywheel Puller. Can one be made?

I actually did make one, and drilled holes to use it for flywheel and prop bearing carrier. I used a cast iron weight from a weight set, 3 or 5 pound I think. It has a perfect hole on the middle for a standard jaw type puller center screw, and the jaws go to the rim of the weight. I used pan head screws I had laying aound to go into the flywheel, and make sure the screws all go down an equal amount so that you pull on all three screws.

To the rudeafrican,
Your puller sounds exactly like the puller I made. It also works fine on lawnmowers and steering wheels. You should consider changing your name to the "helpfulafrican".

I made my own too

I turned a disk of stainless steel, welded an inch of a stainless water tube on it, and welded a 3/4" nut on top. Drilles holes for 1/4" bolts for both sizes flywheels. Works fine, i took a couple ot really tough ones loose with it, had to punch on wrench with one pound hammer to get nut loose!

Suggestion on the homemade pullers,

Make the holes for the pulling bolts slotted so they can handle different diameters.

Worked for me to.

OBJim :D

One last thing, its implied, you need to attach a lever arm to the disk to be able to apply torque to the center screw when you put a wrench on said screw else you will be applying the load to the 3 screws on the flywheel. The flywheels on my engines are soft metal(aluminum I think).

Re: Flywheel Puller. Can one be made?

JohnM
I guess one I made is two simple but it works. I took a piece of 1/2 inch aluminum plate and drilled three holes to match flywheel holes. I drilled the holes larger than the 1/4 by 20 holes in the flywheel.
I take off the flywheel nut and remove washer and then screw mut back on but only until flush with top of shaft. I then take three bolts that screw into flywheel and screw on a nut on each one all the way up. I put my plate on and screw the bolts down all the way into the flywheel. Now just tighten the extra nuts down enenly until the flywheel pops off. Simple

Hey boatist, I like your idea. Simple, easy, few parts and it works, brilliant mate.

Two flathead screwdrivers and a rubber hammer usually do the trick…………..
