It is a long key part #302602, should it be parallel to the taper, or more parallel to crank? Hate to have to buy another one for$17. and drive couple of hours to get another. please advise, thanks , ron

They are set parallel to the center line of the crank, not parallel to the taper.
Torque is 60-65 ft-lbs

Sure you got the right key? The 1960 parts book sez it takes a 306253. 302602 was used in 1958. Some of those had the key parallel to the taper. Look at the keyway in the flywheel. I believe it is the same depth the whole length? Then the key goes parallel to the taper. Rule does not apply to all motors.

EDIT: I just looked at a flywheel. Tx is correct.

Is the crank on the 1960 35hp Gale the same as the 1959 Big Twin 35hp, or is it the same as the 1960 40hp Big Twin?

There are 2 different cranks and keys listed for the 1959 Big Twin, depending on the serial number. Confusing....

Confusing for sure.

1959 (early) J/E uses 302602 key and 305362 crankshaft.
1959 (late) J/E uses 306253 key and 306252 crankshaft
1960 Gale uses 306253 key and 553904 crankshaft.

The connecting rods were also changed mid-year in the 1959 J/E. I didn't follow through with that on the Gale.

I think POSSIBLY the difference between a 306252 crankshaft and a 553904 crankshaft MIGHT be chrome plating on the lower seal area on one or the other of them. The chrome was to prevent rusting of the steel under the sliding carbon seal. I could be wrong on my assumption. Been too many years..........at least I can remember what I had for breakfast.

At least you were alive in '59!
I wasn't even a gleam in my daddy's eye then.

Yep, going to work every day in the outboard shop, and having fun water skiing and stuff on days off. Had a new '59 Chevy convertible, and a girl friend. Till Uncle Sam sent me a draft notice in 1960. Instant lifetyle change.
