fly wheel removal tips needed............115 hp chrysler

Ok im changing the stator have gear puller bolted into the top of fly wheel (not the sides) got the retaining nut off started to use gear puller once tightened down... now its tight and when trying to pull the flywheel it all turns what shuold i use to keep motot from turnnig over without damageing anything?????? thanx <br /><br />Ray

You could use a strap wrench.I usually use a large screwdriver between one of the bolts and the center screw.Keep it low close to the flywheel so it strains the bolt less.I usually leave the nut on loosely to protect the threads that way you can get the screw driver against the nut and a bolt.Sometimes you have to whack the the screw to pop things loose.Tighten the screw and whack it a couple of times and tighten it again and so forth.

ok one question i have is the flywheel has the magnets one this inside of it correct... would a few light shots with a hammer or mallet hurt them... i was told not to jar the flywheel at all when removing.......

I wouldn't hit the flywheel just the top of the center of the puller.Its hard to believe that would be any different than the impact of a starter and 1000s of hours of engine operation.

Use an impact wrench on the gear puller.

yeah i used an impact and it pulled the damn threads out of one of the bolt holes still on the bolt so now I am stuck!!!!!!! any ideas i might have a tapping set but im not for sure havent looked yet gave up after it stripped the hole clean!

Don't panic. I had a similar problem, the flywheel was really on there. I re-tapped the holes for the next larger size bolt. I made sure I used Grade 8 bolts so they wouldn't snap.<br /><br />Another trick is to tightened up the puller and then tap on the center post with a hammer. The shock sometimes loosens the flywheel.
