Fly wheel re-installation

I needed to replace the stator in a 1974 Mercury 402 Serial number: 9034098

first of all I removed the fly wheel replaced the stator and put the fly wheel back on.

But I did not mark the position of the fly wheel prior to removal.

Searched a couple of posts and found some info; should cylinder Number 1 be at TDC and where do I align the flywheel to?

Possibly having timing issues which this could be the culprit

thanks

Re: Fly wheel re-installation

Timing could be out by 45 degrees or more if you took the 8 bolts out.---------Previous post you say the motor started right up.----If you removed the 8 bolts to take the flywheel off it needs to be put back exactly the same.--------Look for rust / stain marks to get it right.----The flywheel is usually removed as one piece.

Re: Fly wheel re-installation

Set the top cylinder to TDC with a screwdriver. Now turn the outer flywheel until the timing marks align and the bolt holes match. Since they flywheel can only be installed a few ways, the timing marks will be way off if you install it incorrectly. That makes it easy to install correctly.

Previously you mentioned that timing pointer was missing.--Means you have to figure out and make your own timing marks.

Re: Fly wheel re-installation

Hi

Previously I swapped the plug leads over and the motor started right, but had to keep going up to full throttle to keep her running. Which made me think the timing could be off.

Wondering where exactly the timing marks should be on the motor it self? I can see a line on the flywheel but as far as I can tell the indicator for setting it to is missing!

thanks

Re: Fly wheel re-installation

Being the timing is govern by the inside hub which stayed on the engine and the outside ring (that was removed) just generates A/C power, it really doesn't make any difference unless you are setting the timing. The not idling is more than likely carb problems.
