Did anybody saw the FLW Series tourn on lake Lanier yesterday? They had the most fish friendly scale I've seen. The fish were put in a clear plastic box with holes on the bottom. As the angler wait for their turn to go up to the scale, the box was placed in a tank. The scale is a glass box with water in it. The fish box is then dropped into it, the water in the glass box would fill up the fish box. The fish were in water the entire time except when the angler was walking up to the scale. It pretty neat to see the fish swimming while getting weighted.

Yea, I think it's great...

The water in the tank is also airated so there is plenty of oxygen...

how do they weight them? water displacement or with the actual weight? Wouldnt there be a difference though with them being wet and weighing them?

Re: FLW Series weighing system

not sure skeeterboy but it would makes sense that they do it by actual weight because water is lost after each box gets pull out. I would think that the scale is zeroed each time and the weight of the box get subtracted automatically from the total weight giving the fish weight. As far as the fish being wet? it affected everyone so it wouldn't make a different, it's a level playing field.

The scale is automatically set to a specific minus wieght for the box prior to each weight taken... I imagine the box might weigh aroun 2 lbs. So the scale will always be set to read -2.0 lbs with whatever water is in the tank.

They simply zero the scale every time to eliminate tare weight, and I think it's programmed to do it automatically.

Re: FLW Series weighing system

That's where I do my part-time in fisheries management.
We just got done a week ago taking walleye eggs and I seen 4 state record walleye swim off after stripping eggs... unreal wallys... all 3 species of blacks present in decent numbers, spots are real good. The largemouth have suffered some from tourney mortality...last summer there were 209 sanctioned tourneys on the Bluffs..2 were B.A.S.S. in about '96-'99 it was nothing to fish an afternoon and boat 50 Bass over 3lbs, with several 5-6's mixed in...Now are electrofishing samples show nearly every fish netted has hook wounds..about 95%. A healthy Bass population will show less than 40% hook wounds.
We're working on getting new vegitation started in the countless coves as the brood habitat has now degraded to the point it won't keep yearlings alive-very low survival. The lake went from a max of 11ft depth in 1992 to 65ft in 1993, and it had been down for 20 some years with loads of salt-cedar...for 8 years it was one hellof a bass factory. The open-water spieces have taken a strong hold now though...whitebass, Wipers, walleye, some of the nicest crappie around but few numbers-the walleye have cleaned house on the crappie, and very clear water.
2 weeks ago we were starting to find a few largemouth mid-day, up shallow cruising...April 1st to the end of may is the best for Largemouth...you'll have to beat the walleye off with a stick if you fish points with jig-n-pig though. Cranks in the Timber will make you look twice before thumb-locking what you think is a bass too....

209 sanctioned tournys thats what ya call preassure

sounds like the state needs to slow that down a little for awhile.why do'nt they put a limit on it like one bass over 18" a day.for 3 years until the population gets better, that also stop so many people coming to that lake and bass fishing for awhile.

Yea, My father grew up near Cedar Bluff, and we have followed the story that you told except for the electrofishing part.

My main lake for fishing tournaments also has quite a bit of pressure, two years ago they had over two hundred and fifty tournaments.. They are trying to do the vegetation thing also with what they call "native" grass don't know what the actual name is for it... Even though there is quite a bit of grass in the lake now which just recently returned a few years ago after being killed off in the early 90's from flooding, however I guess it is not what they want in there...

Ron,

Cedar Bluff in western Kansas is a quite unique lake. It's pretty clear and doesn't have a lot of drainage into it and it was built in a no cover area (just imagine Kansas) no trees etc.

The lake was basically drying up for the last 20 years due to lack of rain. All the vegegitation around the lake, shrubs small trees etc. grew in the areas previously underwater. And in one year the lake filled up and provided unbelievable cover for bass. The lake blew up, and the stories coming from the fisherman, tournaments were unbelievable (for a Kansas Lake anyway). But now the lake is dropping in elevation again and the cover is dissapearing also. Now the fishing is dropping. Part of it is due to pressure obviously but the lake just can't support the number of fish that were there a few years ago due to the "lack" of habitat that is increasing year by year.

Sounds like a killer lake at full pull,it would be hard to grow grass in a lake that fluctoates that much,is it drying back up because of drought?i totally understand what ya talking about.its amazing how things take its toll on a fishery.

Yea, not enough rain. But even the cover that was submerged and is still underwater is degrading quite a bit. That lake can get extrememly windy (as all others in Kansas) and much of it gets beat up quickly. Grass has a hard time surviving as well.

Re: FLW Series weighing system

Has anybody tried getting bass clubs to plant saw grass or something like that around the lake when it drops,it'll be a yearly process but may be worth it,if anything get the boat scouts to plant the grass each month as it drops in certain areas and as it comes back up it would be awsome fishing.just an idea.they can also put out some dead christmas trees.
