Flush with well water?

Municipal water has a lot of minerals in it too. Should be fine. The marina I work at uses well water for flushing. It's just out of town and not connected to city water. We have bottled water for drinking, but the well water seems quite clean there. And it doesn't taste like it came out of a Clorox bottle.

Flush with well water?

Hi all.... I just had a well and pump installed to water my lawn. I'm curious as to everyones opinions on using the well water to flush my outboard motor after running in saltwater? Wasn't sure if the minerals in the water would hurt or not.

If you are concerned you could always install a $40 whole house filter for the hose spigot, then you would have perfectly clean water. Just put some water in a glass and eyeball it. If there is a lot of junk, then you may want to filter it. Otherwise it will be fine.

Well water is no problem at all for flushing. If you are concerned about getting it flushed as good as you can you may want to invest $30 and get a salt away kit.Charlie

Well water should be fine.....

Unless you live REAL close to the sewage treatment plant of a major city.

I have a hard time trusting them govt. employees to do what they are supposed to do with that,,, ahhh,,,, shall we say, "Stuff", when I live uphill from them,,,,,,

much less where you are in that pourous and sandy soil in them flatlands, as you wait for the Atlantic ocean to fill your living room every Fall.......

har, har, har,,,,,,

Not to say that well water is bad,

but I just had to add something else for you to wonder about.....

Uncle Ed.

I have flushed my motor and body with well water the last 40 years. 90% of people around here in the country have wells. Better than the river water w/clorine that the others get.

Hi Fishallot,

I have been flushing with well water after running in salt water. No problems that I can tell. Have only been doing this for one season.

Even if your well water looks a tad cloudy, the important thing is that it is flushing out the salt before it dries into a hard deposit or has a chance to corrode parts. Probably the best thing is to flush it ASAP after leaving the salt water.

Bottom line is the water from your well is probably cleaner than any water you will ever put your boat in. Don't sweat it.

Mark.

If your concerned about well water harming your outboard just think what lake or river water has the potential of doing. The amount of minerals, sediment, etc. introduced to your motor during flushing is nominal to what goes through it during normal freshwater operation.

When it comes to saltwater, I usually hit the first car wash on the way home and then flush the outboard for several minutes once I get home.

Kevin.

Re: Flush with well water?

Thanks for all the feedback to my question. I was pretty sure the well water was ok to use but wanted to run the question by some experts before using it just to save a few bucks a month off my city water bill.

Well water is fine. I work in the water resources business (hydrogeologist). You are trying to remove salt. It doesn't matter whether there is a little sediment or minerals or bacteria, it will flush the salt out. Unless your well is pumping brine (doubtful) it will be better than leaving the ocean in the motor. If its OK for your lawn or cattle its OK for the motor.

Water that you can drink, is water that you can flush with..
