Hi All,
I have acquired a 1970 or 1971 9.8 hp 110 Mercury outboard. Just below the cover there is a hex bolt/nut/plug? And it says "flush"? Can anyone tell me what that is for?
thanks
tom

Merc put holes in the water pump cover, under that hex plug. You could screw a fitting that would attach to a garden hose, into the hole and flush the motor.

Of course, a proper flushing device is inexpensive and easier to use.

This hole is below the cowling.----I believe at one time you could buy an adapter to screw in there to attach a garden hose to flush motor after use.---No need to run the motor.

Can this "flush" port be used to run the motor out of the water while doing maintenance tasks? Up till now I have been going through the pita process of filling a garbage can with water?

That flush port can be used, skipping the water-filled barrel. However, a flusher device simply slips over the water intakes, and connects to a garden hose, allowing flushing of the motor, while running it at idle.

Much simpler than using the old flush port or the barrel;, IMHO.

But the water intake on that motor is under the cavitation / anti ventilation plate just above the prop.----What flusher device would you recommend for the owner of this motor ??

Yes, racerone is correct. Thats my whole point. Standard earmuffs will not work on these older Mercs. The water intake is on the bottom of the anti ventilation plate just above the prop. So my question is. If I could make an adapter for the flush port for a garden hose connection, will the flush port allow me to run the engine out of the water? I dont want to burn anything up?

Thanks
Tom

Well,
Nowhere near a pro here, but to at least keep your question towards the top...
I did a little research, and without knowing for sure, it appears that NO..
You shouldn't run the engine on the flush port under the cowl..
If I'm understanding correctly, that port would not supply water to the water pump/impeller, and would ultimately destroy it due to running dry...

That flush port is for use when not running...

Many posts I found say similar, That flush port is for use when not running...
But one that seems to sum it up is here:
https://forums.iboats.com/forum/eng...-1966-merc-110-9-8-hp-cooling-water-questions
Post #2... He mentions silver, red and blue bands (I think different years? :noidea:)

Anyway,
Thought this might be helpful, and keep your post up top.....
Until told otherwise, I wouldn't run it on the flush port...

For what it's worth...

jbuote,
Thanks for the link and the reply. I will not try and run the engine through the flush port. it was just a thought that could save alot of hassle when running out of the water.
