Fluctuating oil pressure

I have a 89' OMC(GM) 6 cyl 4.3 w/ cobra outdrive. At idle the oil pressure is low 5 - 15 but ocassionally jumps a little higher, during climb and at higher rpm the oil pressure picks up but occasionally drops also. Is there a good way to tell if the oil pump is going bad, do sending units tend to go bad, I assume this is the original sending unit and oil pump.

what oi are you useing 15w50 . you can get a machanical gage and it will tell what is happening they are cheap like we can get them in canada for like 10 bux

check it with mech. gauge first like torxdrive says. could also be gauge or sender. start there.
