I see alot of boats on the internet from florida. Some of these boats seem to be in good shape and a decent value. Any opinion on purchasing a southern boat?

A Florida boat gets at least 2-3 times the use as a northern boat not to mention the sun exposure. That is really what I call a used boat.Charlie

i would somewhat agree with charlie, although i use my boat up here in maryland 9-10 months out of the year (striper fishing). i just think you have a lot of boats in florida, period. with so many used boats around, the price is gonna be a little more reasonable. some of the best boats out there are born and built in florida (ex. intrepid).

Re: Florida Boats

Buying a used boat in FL is chancing due to the saltwater exposure and not knowing what the owner did to wash down boat/flush engine. A new boat is another story. I saved $8-10 thousand on a new Pro-Line from a dealer (Homasasso Springs, FL) that is close to where the boat was built over the closest dealer (Houston TX) to me in Dallas, TX. I drove from Dallas to FL to pick the boat up and couldn't be more pleased. The dealer took me out for a test run and showed me how to operate everything and then took off back to TX.

The price of a new boat seems to be the same in Massachusetts as in Texas, really high. I am also considering driving down and purchasing and trailering back home. Or even having one shipped up.

You don't see many old boats in Florida (ones in good shape). At least not like in other parts of the country. They get used a lot and beat up quickly down here. The best buys in a Florida boat are from the center of the state where they stay in fresh water. Along the St.Johns River. Northern freshwater boats that are transplanted down here bring the highest resale.

Re: Florida Boats

Hi,

I live in MA, and bought a used 2001 Scout sportfish from Ft. Meyers from a dealer. I must admit that I was a bit leery about buying the boat because I could not get down to see it. But it was the boat with the extras I wanted and could not find a good price anywhere as close on the northeast. This boat was in great shape and was told it was garaged, it seemed to be. I am very happy with the package. It was turn key just as they said, I had no problems. I did research the boat and prices as well as call and talk with the sales folks etc at the yard. I did not find any of the issues that were mentioned in the posts above. The boat is a 2001, with a 2001 50Horse Yamaha and 2001 Performance trailer. That may be why. But the previous owner really did take care of this boat. I say do your research and talk to the owner/broker to see exactly what is available and if anything nees to be done. I was firm that I would not buy if I had to do any "extras" to get the boat seaworthy.

Well Scott I've probably bought a dozen of them over the years from 10' to 28' and have yet to be burned. Of course I live here (Miami) and do take proper care of them. I have not had any problems directly related to use in salt water.
