i just purchased a 1994 90hp bayliner reflexx jet boat. i have good automotive mechanical ability however this is a whole new monster to me. im not used to these jet drives and marine engines. i purchased the boat from a guy who had no, none, zip mechanical ability and the boat wouldnt run but it would turn over. i got the boat for a great price but of course its going to take some time and money for me to get to know it a little better and trust it on long trips on the water. i cleaned the carbs and backed the idle air screws out 2 1/2 turns based on the common amount of turns im used to from dirtbikes and other carb setups ive encountered. please note: i dont have a manual yet but i just ordered it...thanks kend301. so i charged the battery and hooked up to a hose via the hook up on the top side of the engine (which the guy told me was the correct way to hook it up) apparently its not now that i have done some research. the boat started right up and i never let it run very long on that hose hook up anyay because something in my mind wasnt trusting it to begin with. i would start it and mess with the idle air screws a bit then shut it off. i then realized the whole throttle linkage and cables must be stretched and out of adjustment because the throttle bodies wouldnt open to full WOT and the cable wouldnt return to its full resting place at idle so after going over all the cables and adjusting all of them i think ive got it. MY 1ST MAIN CONCERN: RUNNING IT ON THAT HOSE HOOK UP AT THE TOP SIDE OF THE MOTOR....WHAT DAMAGE COULD I HAVE DONE? I didnt hear a blow out of the ride plate or anything like that but i have not pulled the ride plate off yet to check it out. i have run the boat down to the water and put it in because i know some early model carb vehicles requires back pressure to run efficient and a friend of mine who has been boating for years said that he doesnt know if maybe to make idle adjustments i need the boat in the water because it needs that water for backpressure....not sure on this though and either is he. so we put it in at a local marina and putted it slowly up and down the marina to make sure everything works...we never opened her up though. we only moved at no wake speed and blipped the throttle for quick course corrections and the boat seemed to work fine. im just being overcautious as i always am with anything i get into. ANOTHER CONCERN: WHERE CAN I FIND IDLE AIR SCREWS FOR THIS MODEL? while tearing the carbs down i noticed of course shes no virgin and somebody must have wrenched on the upper idle air screw and has worn grooves into it. also note: i put the idle air screws at 2 1/2 turns becuase somebody had all three way off from one another already so i didnt have a positive clue on where they should be set at....i state this so nobody thinks im an idiot who just tears stuff down with no systematic approach hahaha i was raised smarter than that...atleast id like to think so :D ANOTHER QUESTION: WHAT WIRE WOULD I HOOK A TACHOMETER UP TO? i was thinking about adding a tach and a voltage guage just for safe measure. ANOTHER QUESTION: I HEAR MORE ABOUT THE WEAKNESS OF THESE BOATS IS THE FACT THAT THEIR RIDE PLATES PICK UPS FLOW TERRIBLY....IS THERE A WAY TO IMPROVE FLOW?

i know this is a novel but im just putting it out there so everyone understands the full situation. i have other questions but i figure these are plenty for right now. i thank every one of you that help me out with some answers or even clues to help further my understanding of these boats and i wish you all great boating :) also thank you kend301 i read your pwc basics page and it cleared up some stuff i have to check when i get home and the bottom paragraph made me feel terrible sorry for PMing you about that...i guess i was probably number 9 of the month to ask for help, sorry about that bud.

Welcome to the world of Iboats ..
Question one : if you did not hear the overheat buzzer or a muffled boom and the ride plate is still flush with the hull , No you did no damage.
Question two : Idle air screws should be set at 1 1/2 turns out and adjusted from there .
Question three : the tach lead is the gray wire that hooks up to nothing since you do not have a tach .
Question four : This is the same one I ask myself , I am going to try some mods over the winter to improve flow and will post up results as they work , but yes the flow sucks the farts out of train seats .

PS you were somewhere around number 14 this month , sorry you did not make the top 10 , should have posted up earlier ;):D

What size fuel tanks do these 90hp reflexxes have? Just by glancing at what I can see of the tank it looks really small like under 10 gallons? I have not had to put any fuel in this yet which is why I'm wondering. Also is the throttle and cables all have a special way to be synced or do you just make sure the shaft returns to its full resting place and then adjust everything else accordingly? My manual will be in on Wednesday but I figured I get some of these answers straightened out so when I get the manual I have an immediate game plan bc I would like to get this boat ready for its "test beat" this weekend. If possible. Haha.

Re: flippersportjet sport jet questions

18 Gallon tank
All cable adjustments are done at WOT (wide open throttle)
1 Be sure carb butterflies are horizontal and not going past wide open.
2 Jet gate should clear the jet nozzle by 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

Yes I can tell the butterflies are not going past their horizontal point at WOT but what were you stating in the second sentence? what gate? I may know it and not know the term but is there any way you could explain what gate you are talking about or a picture? If not possible I can try to figure it out. Thanks again!

Re: flippersportjet sport jet questions

On the back of the boat you have a curved gate to redirect waterflow , with the boat "in gear" the gate will rise so the water flow out of the jet drive moves the boat , At WOT the bottom of the gate should clear the top of the jet drive nozzle .

O ok yes I know what you mean and yes the second day I owned the boat I went all over it and adjusted that and the steering. I thought you were still talking about the carbs there. Yah know i've been around cars and car forums all my life and I must say a boat forum is the way a forum should be....helpful and friendly! Car forums all have too many egos who would rather insult you and your vehicle rather than help. I'm damn glad I've switched my hobby to boating!

Re: flippersportjet sport jet questions

Today I checked the ride plate and sure enough its bent...I know it was even before I owned it though because it was like that the day I bought it so I thought it was normal. so i pulled it off and got the vice and a wood block and hammer and took out some anger on it. It fits good now nice and flush. Now I noticed that the end of the ride plate is slotted...could that be a factory way to space out the rear bolts to help the boat plane out? If you space it out it would bend the rear of the plate down so I'm wondering if that is what its for.

Re: flippersportjet sport jet questions

They use the same ride plate on several different boats so the screw holes are slotted in some areas to allow for mounting on all boats. Put the plate on flush with the hull in the front and work your way back . Moving the ride plate back will result in a gap in the front slowing the boat down.
The best way to get one of these to plane quicker is a set of Nauticus smart tabs , Call greg at 1-800-233-0194 for proper application for your boat as lots of these jet drives need custom actuator pistons.

Re: flippersportjet sport jet questions

Well its not actually the bolt holes that are slotted. About 5 inches off the back of the plate are two slots down the sides where the rubber seal is and instead of trying to explain it ill just try to take a picture on Wednesday of it and post it :)
