i just purchased a 1994 90hp bayliner reflexx jet boat. i have good automotive mechanical ability however this is a whole new monster to me. im not used to these jet drives and marine engines. i purchased the boat from a guy who had no, none, zip mechanical ability and the boat wouldnt run but it would turn over. i got the boat for a great price but of course its going to take some time and money for me to get to know it a little better and trust it on long trips on the water. i cleaned the carbs and backed the idle air screws out 2 1/2 turns based on the common amount of turns im used to from dirtbikes and other carb setups ive encountered. please note: i dont have a manual yet but i just ordered it...thanks kend301. so i charged the battery and hooked up to a hose via the hook up on the top side of the engine (which the guy told me was the correct way to hook it up) apparently its not now that i have done some research. the boat started right up and i never let it run very long on that hose hook up anyay because something in my mind wasnt trusting it to begin with. i would start it and mess with the idle air screws a bit then shut it off. i then realized the whole throttle linkage and cables must be stretched and out of adjustment because the throttle bodies wouldnt open to full WOT and the cable wouldnt return to its full resting place at idle so after going over all the cables and adjusting all of them i think ive got it. MY 1ST MAIN CONCERN: RUNNING IT ON THAT HOSE HOOK UP AT THE TOP SIDE OF THE MOTOR....WHAT DAMAGE COULD I HAVE DONE? I didnt hear a blow out of the ride plate or anything like that but i have not pulled the ride plate off yet to check it out. i have run the boat down to the water and put it in because i know some early model carb vehicles requires back pressure to run efficient and a friend of mine who has been boating for years said that he doesnt know if maybe to make idle adjustments i need the boat in the water because it needs that water for backpressure....not sure on this though and either is he. so we put it in at a local marina and putted it slowly up and down the marina to make sure everything works...we never opened her up though. we only moved at no wake speed and blipped the throttle for quick course corrections and the boat seemed to work fine. im just being overcautious as i always am with anything i get into. ANOTHER CONCERN: WHERE CAN I FIND IDLE AIR SCREWS FOR THIS MODEL? while tearing the carbs down i noticed of course shes no virgin and somebody must have wrenched on the upper idle air screw and has worn grooves into it. also note: i put the idle air screws at 2 1/2 turns becuase somebody had all three way off from one another already so i didnt have a positive clue on where they should be set at....i state this so nobody thinks im an idiot who just tears stuff down with no systematic approach hahaha i was raised smarter than that...atleast id like to think so ANOTHER QUESTION: WHAT WIRE WOULD I HOOK A TACHOMETER UP TO? i was thinking about adding a tach and a voltage guage just for safe measure. ANOTHER QUESTION: I HEAR MORE ABOUT THE WEAKNESS OF THESE BOATS IS THE FACT THAT THEIR RIDE PLATES PICK UPS FLOW TERRIBLY....IS THERE A WAY TO IMPROVE FLOW?
i know this is a novel but im just putting it out there so everyone understands the full situation. i have other questions but i figure these are plenty for right now. i thank every one of you that help me out with some answers or even clues to help further my understanding of these boats and i wish you all great boating also thank you kend301 i read your pwc basics page and it cleared up some stuff i have to check when i get home and the bottom paragraph made me feel terrible sorry for PMing you about that...i guess i was probably number 9 of the month to ask for help, sorry about that bud.
