I am considering putting some cleats on my 1648 flat bottom Jon boat because I do not feel it to be convenient to use the lift handles on the back and front. Does anyone have any ideas of where to mount them in the front and back. Also, what hardware was used and if anyone has pictures of their install that I could see would be great. Thank you in advance.

You talking about handles to make lifting easier? You operate in salt or fresh water. You picky about asthetics or you use your boat, don't just look at it? If handles for lifting, how many folks will be lifting?

If your answers are such that it doesn't really matter. Go to the hardware store and buy handles used for opening garage doors. They are about 6" long with about a 1 1/2" diameter gripping section which is wide enough and round enough for easy gripping. 4 holes make for sturdy mounting. Get suitable length fasteners with bolts/screws to fit the holes with flat and lock washers, and nuts. If in salt water get SS hardware which hardware stores carry in addition to Zinc plated steel which would do for most applications and a cheaper price.

Mount just under the gunwale (top edge of the sides of the hull) wherever is convenient for your application.

I've been running jon boats for over 30 years and have never used anything other than the handles for mooring lines. In my opinion mooring cleats not only get in the way but are a trip hazard as well. If you're concerned about a mooring line falling out of the boat while running and possibly getting stuck in the prop then tie a snap hook to the line so you can stow the line while you're using the boat. One of the nicest things about a jon boat is the simplicity...don't overcomplicate things and just use the lift handles fore and aft.
