Just a question: Does it seem that the flappers tend to get too hot and melt or fall apart when running on muffs? Is it as much of a problem for boats the remain in the water? Or do the flappers just get worn and fall apart?

Re: flapper question

IMHO, they are worthless and cause more problems than they solve.......If you don't do stupid things....I.E. shut off from full throttle .... I have never had a problem from a properly tuned up engine without them.......Volvo recomends that you chuck 'em.........JK

Re: flapper question

rodbolt, he doesn't mention the flavor of his outdrive. I know Volvo now recommends not using them, but what are your thoughts about an '89 4.3L Cobra? Given where they are in the system, seems like it would take a heck of a following surge to bring them into play.

On the other hand, I'm often towing tubers or wakeboarders, so there are occasions that call for an immediate throttle down to neutral (with some pretty good following wakes if I've got advanced tubers on and am doing figure 8's at low speed to really give them a ride).

As long as the engine is still running, any guess as to how much that would reduce the possibility of a following wake making it all the way up past the risers to a point where it could cause trouble if I don't have the flappers in there?
