Hey guys,

Last new topic of the day! honest ! >:)

Engine: Mariner 60
S/N: 675 3028

I have come to the conclusion that at least one, if not all of the oil seals in the gearbox/lower unit of my engine are shot, and need replacing. I came to this conclusion since all of the oil that was in the engine... is nowhere to be found... and what little was left, decided to start dripping out of the prop area today.

I have been having a look online, and at previous forum posts to try and see if there is a simple kit that can be purchased that will allow all the seals/gasgets to be replaced, but I haven't had much luck, so I assume that I will need to purchase the various items on their own.

I have been having a look at the manual I have, and from what I can tell, I believe there are seals in the following places that I should replace.

2 seals below the water pump O ring/water pump base
1 seal directly beside the water pump (looks rectangle shape)
2 seals between the thrust hub and the roller bearing on the prop shaft.

Can anybody confirm if this is everything, or if I have missed something, or even if there are any basic tests I should do, etc.

The seal I mentioned directly beside the water pump looks broken, mainly because it is cracked in half. Acording to the manual I have, this is a seal.

Any advice/info that peeps can give would be great. I would like to head to the shops tomorrow and hopefully get what i need.

Thanks in advance

Heya,

yup its a 2 stroke, 60hp mariner. There is oil that is mixed with the fuel... which is ok.

Then there is oil which goes into the lower section of the engine, for the gear box / prop

Oh...I see.;)

You can pressurize the gear case per the manual to check for a leak.

Hi Cell,

I noticed it said about doing that in the manual, But i dont have a tester to use. I had a look around at the cost of buying one, and its about ?50. It will be cheaper to replace all the seals, than to buy the bit of kit to check all the seals, so i am going to give this a miss for now.

Keep in mind that if you don't torque the big nut behind the prop to proper specs you can damage your gears/clutch dog.So it might be worth getting the service tool for that procedure.....but then again I just used a hammer and a punch. But I don't recommend it.
