when you get a nasty backlash put your thumb on the spool and reel 8 to 10 turns then your backlash should just come out you may have to do it a couple of times but it really works

seen bill dance did the same thing only he said to tighten the drag real tight and reel. I tried it a couple times and it didn't work that well. Anymore, old habit make me start picking automatically.

Re: fixing a backlash

I tried that out this weekend and it didn't work. I even tried praying the backlash away, that didn't work either. Guess thats what I get for letting a few choice words out when I got the backlash

Get a spinner or closed face. I don't understand everyone's obsession with baitcast. I'm just as accurate with the others & have half the problems.

Re: fixing a backlash

I worked on ocean charter boats for a couple years in Westport, WA. Pretty much dealing with 20-25 inexperienced baitcaster users all day long. I've seen balls of line on spools bigger than the reel itself, and we could usually get them out. What worked for us was holding the line slack off the spool, setting it on free spool and and giving it a couple very quick yanks by hand. Don't just pull, that will tighten it up, but a quick yank will tighten it and slack it again quickly. If it doesn't work the first 2 tries, look where the line overlaps and try to pull it up loose, and quick yank again. Almost ALWAYS comes out.

Grandmas Qrochet (SP) needles help get to the problem quickly. They have a small hook on the end and look like smal knitting needles.

Most baciklashes will usually have one or more loops in the line on the spool. Grab the loop and pull at the slack line then set the reel to free spool to pull out the remainder of the backlash....Works for me 95% of the time.

I have 5 or 6 $50 a pop closed faced [ i.e. spin cast ] reels that I use a lot. I have one pretty nice baitcaster. I would much rather fight a fish on the baitcaster. Smoooth reeling; instant anti-reverse; smooth drag that is easily adjusted while playing the fish; and the super fast 6.3:1 ratio allows you to take up the slack in a hurry when the fish makes a run at you.

Backlashes are a pitn but I mostly use the baitcaster under ideal conditions or for live bait off the back of the boat where you just strip off some line and let the sinker do the work :D

If I'm going to be doing a bunch of casting of light lures then I use the spincast. Zebco has the new Omega you should try. 2 different sizes. 6 ball brgs. Instant anti reverse. Very nice reel. I going to sell some of my Daiwa Goldcast III's and replace them with the Zebco's [ which is something I thought I would never say :p ]

why is my thumb on the spool? my guess is, try to keep the top layer of line from spinning, so the spool spins under it?

Saxis, that "yank" method...that was with large-diameter mono, 50lb test or more, right? ever try it with braid?

thanks,

Professional backlash. Never had one. Had a few that even a professional couldn't get out but figured it out.
Need good finger nails, a nail or pick. Pull back on loops toward the rear, pull forward then once stops repeat. Have never gotten a baitcaster overrun to not come out. Now open face spincaster when wind grabs the line and spool overruns, that is a different story.

Re: fixing a backlash

I abandoned open and closed face spinning gear because:

There is not a spincast reel with enough capacity or a decent drag for fighting big fish, and there is no way to modulate a cast with a thumb.

Open face cannot tolerate any line twist and there is no way to modulate a cast with a thumb. Drags are generally poor compared to top-line baitcasters.

Now, that said, most backlashes are caused by failure to set spool tension correctly for the lure and wind conditions, casting upwind when set for downwind casting and overcasting for the lure and conditions. Invariably, the lure has slowed more and faster than the spool, the spool overruns and viola!

Casting like a ballplayer who hits for average instead of one who hits for the fence all the time will greatly reduce backlashes. I have fished for as long as a week without one.

When one does occur, a crochet needle and a hemostat usually get it out in a few seconds.

quote by PAkev "Most baciklashes will usually have one or more loops in the line on the spool. "

This is exactly what I do and I almost always get the backlash out within a few seconds.

One thing that reallys helps me is, the instant a backlash starts happening during the cast, I press my thumb down on the spool to prevent the backlash from getting real bad. I think this helps tremendously. I'm still learning how to set the brake and magnet properly when flipping and pitching and even though I get backlashes sometimes, they generally aren't much of a hinderance.

Re: fixing a backlash

Im with JB, if you are getting more than one backlash in a trip, play with your settings. I will usually just tighten the tension on the spool up, then loosen it up with each cast as I see fit.

But when I do get one, I can usually pick it out within a few seconds, if not I throw the rod down and pick up another one. No need in wasting time with one rod when there are 4 others calling my name :D If I ever run out of rods i'll either have get better at casting, or buy some more rods :)
