My parents had a new dock built at their lake house. The dock sways a bit when you walk on the second level deck that is over the boat. The dock has a lot of pilons of what a I think is 8x8 PT. The decking is using trex and they didn't level all of the joists so it looks uneven at some parts with a noticible lump on one section. I don't think they used joist hangers and it looks like the fastened the joists to the frame with spikes.

Sounds like it needs some diagonal bracing to shore up the corners.

Spikes can and will loosen up. Through bolts would be a much better solution. Lags would be better than spikes but not as good as bolts.

The un-level deck is just lazy workmanship IMO.

Don't know if there is a warranty or if they would return to fix the issue if called.

Maybe some guy wires/cables in "X" patterns with turnbuckles to tighten/take some of the sway out of the structure?....without photos that would be my first idea....

Many composite decking materials (TREX) require 12" or even 10" joist spacings. There may be the place to start.

Synthetics will last a long time, but only when properly installed. I would say the folks that did the deck were not licensed and insured professionals. Did the even have building permits? If not, you could be made to remove it all and start over... I'd check on it for sure... It really isn't hard to do quality work, but seems so many try to get away with as little as they can to put another dollar in their pockets. :jaw:

If you used a company I would see if they would fix it. If they don't file with the BBB.
