Hello.

I bought my first sailboat this week. Got such a steal on it I didn't care if the motor ran or not as I'm going to put a new 4-stroke on it anyway. I'm going to put the new motor off till next year and decided to use this motor till I got all the funds for the new one.

The motor is a Tohatsu 50 2 stroke. It runs good but when I hooked the ear-muffs to it I don't see any water coming out of it. The seller said everything worked fine a year ago but has been in storage since. (I only ran the motor for about 15 seconds at idle. I could hold my hand constantly on the head, it was probably 85 degrees warm)

My question is what do I need to do to get water to flow through the motor or how can I check to make sure everything is working alright? Is there a thermostat that I need to wait 5 minutes to open for the water to flow through or should it start coming out the hole immediately? (I assume the latter...)

Thanks for anyones help on this as the owners manual is not really specific when it comes to the cooling system on this model.

Re: Fist Tohatsu

You should stick a water pump in it and the test the engine in the water. The thermostat never shunts all of the water so that would be an unlikely source as the problem. I would suggest taking it into a dealer and having it checked. If that isn't possible your first step would be to secure a service manual so that you have a guide as to what to do and how to do it.

Re: Fist Tohatsu

Thanks Elvin.

By "Sticking a water pump in it" do you mean replace the impeller?
Is that easy to do?
Are there any threads here outlining the procedure possibly with pictures?
Where on the motor is the thermostat located?

I will buy a book but would like to look into the motor a little more while I'm waiting for the book to arrive, hense the questions.

Thank you.

Stick a water pump kit in it. Repalcement of the impeller only is almost always a mistake. Any service manual will have the procedure outlined in it. You can download a free parts book from our website if you want an idea as the the relationship of the parts and where they are on the engine( IE, line drawings and part numbers).
